The Twisting Nether

One thing I've always wandered about the WoW universe is what is The Twisting Nether.

Over the years I've heard and read many interesting theories like it is an alternate dimension, or some sort of hyperspace where time and space rules don't apply normaly. But one thing is confirmed - The Twisting Nether exists inside the Great Dark Beyond and not the other way around.

My theory is that the Twisting Nether is the equivalent of the Time Vortex in doctor who.
