Blood Spirits and Patterns ruined my profit margin in 5.0/5.1

Thank goodness for the new method to get Leatherworking recipes in the next patch.

I've been leatherworking for years and have done ok with making high-end gear for the AH. However, this expansion I got crushed. I'm an early adapter and pay well for recipes, even going so far as to buy one or two from the BMAH. That was a big expense. Then I waited for the Blood Spirits to start flowing, but they never did. If I can manage to sell all my existing stock at current prices, I'll only lose the price of the lesser materials. It seems to me the only people to make money with the Blood/Harmony system are raiders who sell the recipes, the duper who transferred in stacks of Blood Spirits, and the guy who flipped them. Actual crafters like me lost money.

Is it just me and my quiet little realm or have others had a similar experience?

Tbh those patterns where pretty bad anyway:
Most raiders would have a guildie make them, since the patterns drop alot, and most guilds have enough spirits.
Also since most people would likely take LFR 4 set over 2 better bits crafted with slightly better stats, i don't think you will sell alot of them at this point.

There's basicly to little market for them at this point

I think it might only be your realm. I've made quite a bit of money first during 5.0 selling crafted BoEs for 5-10k profit each. In 5.1 I waited untill the prices of the patterns and Blood Spirits came down (about 2k per pattern and 1k per spirit) and only then I started making the 496 BoEs, which I sell for 8-12k profit each.
My server is quite active tho, with lots of raiding guids and a good supply of patterns and spirits.

I suspected that was the case, Bulz. The relatively low population and small amount of raiding means that the raiding-centric crafting becomes prohibitively expensive on backwater realms. On my realm blood spirits are smuggled in and are offered at prices ranging from 3 to 9k each, and recipes are 12 to 20k each.

A fix appears to be in the next patch, but I hope it is for new recipes rather than the old ones. I'd hate to be punished for playing the game as designed.

Those items would sell well if they were boots/belts/bracers.
Gloves and chest pieces are part of tier set and people just didn't bother with those.

This pretty much. Only really good for fresh 90s.

I like the blood spirit system. It keeps the raiding gear on the raiders in the raiding guilds.
There is no Bad RNG just Bad LTP

Its current incarnation is meant to give raiders the ability to sell to non-raiders or LFR participants. Ghostcrawler said they're revamping it because it "doesn't work so well."

Raiders can still get the gear if it is derived by other means without being restrictive to people who aren't raiding yet or have other interests.

Excellent, excellent point. They'd also help quiet the squeaky wheels who don't care for daillies.

Most guilds that raid aren't downing the bosses that drop tier, meaning that Sha is the only way to get non-LFR versions.

I had my gloves crafted out of guild since the pattern never dropped for us. The itemization for them is better than tier in anycase.

As for lack of blood spirits on the market, it is probably due to having to DE items to get them. That means those guilds that don't need gear from a boss are more likely to get them, which means they are more likely to skip that raid along with it being less likely that a pug gets them (as they aren't as geared and more likely to need the gear).

Good point. There are a lot of steps to getting those blood spirits to a crafting specialist.

    (1) A raid has to happen.
    (2) No one needs that drop.
    (3) It gets disenchanted.
    (4) Someone decides to sell the blood spirit rather than collect them.
    (5) The blood spirit has to be offered for a price which allows a crafter to make a profit.
    (6) There have to be at least six of them available at a price that allows profit to cover time, investment and the chance you are going to be stuck with it when the next patch hits.

On my server few of them get past step 4.

Think its generic, they are still 1.5-2k on hellfire alliance (even more on horde), but we are a server with low active alliance population and on existant horde population (though as blizzard counts accounts that have been used in the last 5 years as active... we are a high pop...)
