Why do people take sports so bloody serious?

Yesterday, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Sweden's biggest football star, announced that he bought 25% of the shares of Hammarby IF, a football club located in Stockholm.

People in Malmö, his home town, went absolutely crazy. Screamed that he betrayed them, that he's Judas and that any goodwill he had in the past is now gone, that he can never be seen as a role model any longer. The statue of him in Malmö has been vandalized, and this night people even visited his home in Stockholm and vandalized his door.

Why the fuck do people take sports so seriously? Sports is just entertainment, interest if you will, for the absolute majority. Why do people take something just meant for fun so serious? It's literally 22 guys running around, kicking a ball. Nothing more.

I love hockey, I watch every game that my team Frölunda Indians play, but I would never even get slightly sad if our captain Joel Lundqvist decided to go to our main rivals, Färjestad or HV71. Instead, I'd just shrug and move on with my day even though I really like him.

    Can someone explain this?

People have been conditioned to see celebrities/sports stars as their heroes, and that hero worship has a certain dynamic... any negative change in that dynamic and the worshipers react badly.

People look at sports teams to try to get a sense of belongingness. It's creepy.

Cause the life of many people sucks. If you have a boring job and a boring life in general then sports are the only thing which can makes their lifes a little sweeter. Therefore they take it way to seriously. The majority of sport fans are losers in life.

Its not just sports, it is anything. Some people are just very emotional and go crazy when things don't go their way.
TO FIX WOW:1. smaller server sizes & server-only LFG awarding satchels, so elite players help others. 2. "helper builds" with loom powers - talent trees so elite players cast buffs on low level players XP gain, HP/mana, regen, damage, etc. 3. "helper ilvl" scoring how much you help others. 4. observer games like in SC to watch/chat (like twitch but with MORE DETAILS & inside the wow UI) 5. guild leagues to compete with rival guilds for progression (with observer mode).6. jackpot world mobs.

Advertising and hype from the media and PR departments really. They have a product and they sell it. People take the hook and there you go.

I'm confused. I get that outrage culture is in vogue now, but, still. A Swedish football player buys stock in a Swedish football team and he's suddenly the Antichrist?
The most difficult thing to do is accept that there is nothing wrong with things you don't like and accept that people can like things you don't.

I mean, given the site you've been posting on for 10 years, you either do, or have done in the past, taken WoW very seriously.

Look at w/e you want, sports, games, movies, politics. Everything has some sort of "fandom" and there are always people that are willing to take these fandoms to the extreme and that is never, never good. I will never understand that myself, like I love Star Wars. But especially after TLJ I never understood the hate people gave it. It's just a movie, maybe you liked it, maybe you didn't, no need to insult each other, or threaten the life of the director, or the actors, or yelling out "You ruined my childhood" even 2 after the movies has been out. I'm gonna guess that these people just doens't have a life and that is why they get so devoted about this 1 thing, and if they feel like they've been let down they will make damn sure you'll hear their voice.

Because human beings are prone to fanaticism.

There's thousands and thousands of years of history spelling that fact out loud and clear. If a person ain't got something he/she is passionate about though, he/she must be very bored.

Its called tribalism and humans love it in any form. It transcends all media and will find it way into anything.

because it's all they have going for them in their life.

they have to live through someone else's success.

Sports is an outlet for the innate human instinct to fight.

Lots of people in this thread devoid of all soul and passion apparently.

There are lots of normal people who are indifferent about sport, but I never met someone who actively went out of their way to hate sports who wasn't a virgin, pseudo intellectual type.

Never liked Zlatan arrogant as fuck.

Think people get more into it following their home tows clubs, like my girlfriend lives in ängelholm and is crazy about rögle in hockey, I like to joke about me following Malmö she hates it haha.
Do you hear the voices too?

It's a very healthy activity. Help your health, your body, your mental, your look.

Sport should be a core part of everyone's life.

the same reason people take video games like certain "MMO game" seriously and we see personal attacks, insults and death wishing upon each other on ceirtains "mmo"s certain "fan site"

I have met many successful and, in some cases, overachieving individuals who are huge into sports.

Calling anyone who gets really into sports "unsuccessful in life" is the epitome of stupidity. Truly sipping the haterade with that one.

Also, I'm envious of big time sports fans. I wish I cared about any hobby as much as these people care about sports.
