I will say that a lot of the weird factor that anime insights in people can be attributed to the East itself, specifically because of the Japanese 'otaku' crowd. A large percentage of them really are what I would consider disturbed. Just look at things like the whole building of shrines and celebrating anime characters and vocaloids birthdays. The way that they get voice actresses shamed and denounced within their cultures, because say, one of them dares to get a boyfriend. And on top of this, there's the whole association of the "men's toys" themes in shows - giant robots, in shows aimed at selling toys to men, not kids and so on. The new transformers was blasted for being OTT nonsense for that exact reason.

Then there's the whole weird side to anime, with the tentacles and porn and questionably aged sex-object younger female characters. The genre has itself to blame for all the hate it receives. Given that Legend of the Overfiend was one of the first really widely known anime in the West, as well as a few other demons and tentacles films, that hasn't helped either. The nearest Western equivalent to Japan's otaku we have at the moment, are bronies.

I'm a fan of anime myself, but I'm all too aware that it's a gigantic quagmire of utter shit, with some real gems here and there.

There really isn't any other animated pornography (that I know of) that's as big as anime, or has a big following like anime. So comparing anime to say, Family Guy, is ignoring the 'dark side' of anime. You can look at Family Guy and associate it with cartoons such as the Simpsons, etc. You can look at anime and associate it with hentai, or you can associate it with DBZ, Pokemon, etc.

The fact that anime has stuff like tentacle rape is enough to steer clear, or have a negative opinion on it.

If you hear there are shootings in a certain area of town, you steer clear, even if that area isn't all bad.
That's just stupid. Anime is a medium, not a genre. Saying that you should steer clear of anime because hentai exists is the same as staying away from movies because pornography exists.

eh i think its no different then if you tell someone you play wow or that you like scifi. it also depends on how indepth you are with what you like and where you are.

Those people I know/seen view seems to be all anime are the 90s kids shows (prbly because it was like the only thing that aired on the usual channels here), some combination with underage girls/ecchi/hentai, the popular shounen shows like Naruto, bleach, dragoball and so on. All those things exist ofc but they are not really the the great side of anime and not even close of all things that exists.
And if its not only those things that put people away, many people seems to have a hard time to watch shows that's not their native tongue or maybe English and whens its dubbed, you cant take a single shit serious most of the time because of the voice acting are so terrible. Oh and some people still seems to think all animated shows are kid shows.

.. now I'm sad, I need to get to know more friends that watch animes

i also partially blame hardcore naruto fans and the loss of toonami.

toonami was a great boost for anime in the west and it would be hard to find teenagers that would tease eachother over if they watched dbz. thankfully toonami is back and just as good as ever and getting pretty solid ratings every week.

as for the naruto fans... well when kids show up to school wearing ninja headbands and pretending to do handsigns its a little weird.

the quality of dubs has increased significantly since the 90s. atleast for english dubs. im not sure what sweden gets though but i know most European dubs of anything anime or live action is typically horrible

I hate them all, I really do. I am a prejudiced man.

If you got the reference, atleast you watch something worthwhile :P

I don't like anime so I can give you the picture from my side of the world.

Anime is full of fully grown people that look like tall 8 year olds but it might also be people taking time of their day to day life to go nuts about cartoons at a right old age. Also from what I've seen most things in anime have really weird personalities. Also because most of the people that I've met that love the stuff are just weird as sin, I think it before they even tell me they love the stuff.

Of the shows that I have seen the last years, or hell all dubs since I started watched anime almost always give me shivers :S To be fair many of them are just because they sound silly they I even find them on youtube and such (not everyone of them, but most). And about sweden, I have no clue how they are now but I thought they was okay when I was little, not so much anymore when I go back and listen to it. today dubbing here I cant really say much tho. But Disney classics dubs I even prefer over the English sometime (only late 80s early 2000 films) but I don't know of nostalgia is a factor or not.

If you haven't watched a single anime in years, how can you lay claim that there hasn't been a good anime in a long time? I don't think you qualify to make such statements.

So I guess we should judge all live action movies because most porn is live actions, right? You realize hentai is a sub genre in Anime and doesn't make up every single show, right...?

Op must live a terrible place, people only look down on modern anime cause of cosplay and those silly dances, or making it super cute. But most people respect manga, like Akira, no one would laugh at me for liking Akira . The 3x3 eyes series was cool, to, the older anime were so much better, just pretend you like the older ones more, not the new ones that have morphed in to you know what.

Yes, well, I do picture most Anime fans as weird.

I'm sorry to say this, but a lot of the rapists/child molesters/murderers/buffalo bill's in my country are indeed Anime fans... so yes, there is a connection between anime and creepiness.

In fact, we even have a saying here in the country, translated to English - it basically goes like this: "Not all Anime fans are creepy, but all the creeps are Anime fans".

I'm not saying you guys in this topic are weird, I'm just saying there is a strong possibility that you are.

Those are awfully ignorant statements to be making with no proof of anything you're even suggesting to back it up.

I thought those things were the fault of violent video games, or action movies, or "The Catcher in the Rye"

i love anime, but i think where people see it being weird is at school.

when i was in high school, the kids that were really into anime, dressed as naruto characters and such. i remember one day, we ran the mile, and there was this one kid who was really into anime, he tried running the mile with his arms raised behind his back, like how they run in naruto.

im not judging them, but i can see why people think its weird

This is obviously off-topic, but everyone with facebook cares what other people think, which is why they are so adamant in showing the part of their person that is socially acceptable.
Been a while since I saw a status update on how much someone likes anime. Admit it, it's a tabu, just like MLP is.

The good ones are becoming more and more rare. Latest animes are all about these ordinary school boys/girls with superpowers who battle thematic sets of enemies. And drama.
Pretty much this, which is why I don't really bother with Anime. Watched a few, but not really a fan.
I do like the art style though.
