Upgrade Help

I'm looking to get some more performance out of my dated and rather crappy rig. Had it for several years at this point and am doing some research as to how to get some more out of it while I save up to build a new one. Used to be able to do 25 mans back in Wrath just by turning the settings down and run 10s at max settings. At this point, I'm having to drop down to low in 10s and I can't even do 25s/LFR. Trying to figure out what the hell is going on at 1 fps . . . sucks.

I believe my main problem is the processor. I'm looking at upgrading to whatever I can find that will go along with my motherboard configuration. Several questions that I have:

1) Can an AM3 go into an AM2/AM2 + board?
2) Would I have to do a fresh install of windows if I were to get a new processor?
3) Would I have to update my BIOS?
4) Is a Phenom II x4 955 BE going to net me some solid performance upgrade? I'm really just looking to be able to get some decent fps in raids . . . and by decent, I'd be happy with 20fps in a 25 man. Sure as hell beats 1-5 fps.

Hoping to help as much as I can, but I'm nowhere near as skilled as some of the people on these forums. Hang tight for them to reply.

1) AM3 has 941 pins, an AM2(+) socket has room for 940. Based on that, I'd go with 'No'. Someone might correct me... (It's a far smaller difference than what intel cpu's show, not sure what the effect is..)
2) Not necessarily, although I did have to do it when switching from a 32 to 64bit mobo/cpu combo.
3) Not necessarily, although it could be that the support for better CPU's have been added later. If so, flashing the bios would be necessary.
4) I really can't comment on this with my limited experience.

Oh I'm in no hurry

I jumped the gun when I built this rig in the first place without doing adequate research, so I'm attempting to be VERY thorough. Especially while saving up for my new rig.

I seem to recall reading somewhere the AMD had designed the AM3's to go into the AM2/+ chipsets to increase backwards compatibility.

I did read something about that, but could only easily find posts that were dated before the release of AM3. ie: they were definitely planning on doing it.

As I said, it's only a 1pin difference, and you might be right on it being backwards compatible. For instance, it's much easier to assume a 2011 pin CPU will not fit into an 1155 socket. Considering it has nearly double the amount of pins. But for AMD.... I'm really not knowledgeable at all I'm afraid.

But don't worry, the guru's must respond soon.

And not being in a hurry is generally a good idea! I did the exact same as you, rushed into buying things only to find out later it wouldn't work as I imagined.

It seems that you're getting lower frames than you ought to be, even with your current setup. While I agree that your system isn't a powerhouse... It shouldn't be lagging like it is.

I would maybe double check drivers, reinstall WoW, clean out your system a bit and check temps, first, before doing anything regarding upgrades. Your system is about as good as the one I upgraded from about a year ago, and it ran WoW 25s just dandy on Low/Medium settings

I believe your MB would support this CPU, however... The MSI website seems to be... missing info, or broken, or something, and it only lists those two CPU's when I KNOW it supports more. So the accuracy of if it will support it is put into question.

Besides, at that price $200 you'd be better off getting an i3 motherboard and cpu setup.

He could get a B75 board + i5 3350P for $240.

That 4650 is an awfully dreadful card. Probably doesn't help any.
