During my hc raiding days every1 had to give in a bis list to the raid leader. If something wasnt on ur list u had low priority even it was an upgrade. When 1 piece was bis for more then 1 person (esp weapons, trinkets etc) the one got it to whom it was the biggest upgrade tokens where given out randomly. though if u won something already this weak u wouldnt be in the run. This worked well for us, in both 25 and 10 man settings.

I am a GM and we have a pretty solid and active raiding team atm, and we use a sort of voluntary loot council. By that i mean that if 2 or more need the same piece, they get a chnace to sort it out themselves, and if not I take it up with my officers and we hand out based on performane / biggest upgrade.

I respect that your guild had this rule (hey atleast they had rules ). But really ... making a list of "your" BIS items?

So everyone got homework to search for their special set of items... And the management didn't think that if you are class X, Y is the best BiS setup? In other words, if you were a firemage - you can only have 1 BiS set. And usually every mage would have the same spec aswell (yes exceptions are there). This would go for EVERY Firemage perhaps even cross class aswell. So why make a list?
And what if you didn't make the perfect list? You forgot that one item to put on your "BiS" list - how would that go? Would that be your own fault?

I seriously would have issues if I was in a guild who handled loot this way. Hey it might work and it might have worked very well for you, so do not get me wrong. But my personal taste would be that an upgrade is an upgrade. And sure there are items that are BiS. So perhaps if you already go with "we give loot to whom benefits most" - BiS or not doesn't matter much.

If you managed to have a bunch of lootwhores trying to justify their greediness behind LC in some guild you've raided with, I'm sorry for you, but do not try to make every guild using LC look like that.
To be honest, reading most of the comments, all people are using counsil distribution in one way or another, even if they think they're using DKP, EP/GP or random rolling. Why? Because almost everybody do loot corrections. Not giving many items in a row to one person, for example, already looks a lot like loot counsil. What is the reason to use DKP if a person with the most points can't have as much loot as possible if this is his wish? None. Then why bother with all that addons, web-pages, downloading, uploading and so on, if you're anyway using corrections in your loot distribution systems?
As the person below you stated, humans by nature are out for themselves. You will always have some bias towards everything and by this simple proven fact, you cannot have a totally "fair" loot council. I don't look at LC in that way, I've used it in the past I just don't think it's good because it takes far too long to sort loot out and people have favoritism even if they think they don't.. "You guys go clear trash us 3 have to spend 10 minutes figuring out who to give loot too".

without being funny, but without making yourself clear on what you actually do, it comes across as " I pick who gets the loot"

I preferred DKP over EPGP when I first started using DKP, as the numbers didn't go stupidly high amongst other things, but then I went back to epgp when I went to another guild, and wasn't to fussed, I like the idea of a loot council, but I find two main problems with it,

the first, in some guilds, a lot of guilds raiders aren't always present, if their doing one night a week or two, and others of the same role with same gear type are doing 3 to 4 nights, then its not that fair, but then again this can be countered by saying they do 2 extra nights they have a chance to maybe get something from those nights if they down something

the second, people like myself who used to raid and be on first name basis and quite friendly with the RL, people start spitting favoritism, hell I remember a few years back when I was raiding, and we did an alt run with no loot systems, the idea behind alt runs was to keep them semi geared as a back up incase a raider dropped, I had some shit on that week and I had to miss the main raid so I went on my main and got told any loot I won, would come off my epgp, which I said yea of course its fair enough, anyways a piece of loot drops, not the best item for me so I said I'd pass it to an alt, but no one wanted it, so I ended up with it, a relic iirc anyways, 2 boss's later something I wanted did drop, rolled for it and won it, straight away an alt started playing up because I already won something, and started shouting down vent it was because I was friends with the RL and I should never of been allowed to come on the alt run, anyways as I was young and to keep the peace I let him have it, he then proceeded to win another 6 items during the run, some of which I could of used but meh I didn't bother to roll

Well, maybe we are lucky to have 0 people who are greedy over violet pixels, but it works perfectly for us, and I think it'll work perfectly for any mature player whose goal is killing boss as soon as possible. I am one hundred percent sure we have none of the things you and that other person mentioned.
In my opinion, there is absolutely no point in getting gear just for the sake of getting gear. Its not vanilla nowadays, you know, noone will fap over your epic geared character in a city or whatever. Also, there is no point in gear as a goal since gear becomes shit faster than random player wins 100 WSGs for his achievement, lol.
