Vegetarians and milk - a question to vegetarian people

    Hi fellow MMO'ers

I bought a blueberry smoothie this morning from my workplace cantine, and it says 'not suitable for vegetarians'
I started to wonder why and I decided to as a colleague of mine.

She said that its because the smoothie contains semi skimmed milk which is produced by cows.

Then I asked her well what if this would have been produced from human breast milk, would it then be 'suitable for vegetarians too!' product?

Now we are both thinking this but we cant find answer.

    What does MMO Champs think?

    Thanks,
    suokki

It depends on why people are vegetarians/vegans. If they are that way because they feel that red meat is bad for them, then either milk would be fine. If they are vegetarians/vegans because they don't like how animals that are bred for meat are treated, then I would think they would have an aversion to milk as well, unless it is local and they know how the cows are treated.

As for breast milk, unless you are keeping women in a stable, milking them, and letting them graze all day, I can't see how it would be against vegan/vegetarian 'ideals'.

Vegetarians eat eggs, drink milk, eat cheese.

VEGANS do not consume any of the above...

A lot of companies lump in vegetarians with vegans as a safety net. Vegetarians consume animal by-products, vegans don't. Smoothies are suitable for vegetarians, unless you're having a really bizarre smoothie, ie bacon ;P

Well, chicken eggs aren't living things.

No, people can't even get "pro-life/pro-choice" about this, the chicken eggs you eat will never hatch into a living creature. They're unfertilized.

Depends on the individual and their reason for not eating meat. There are vegetarians who avoid things like eggs and milk, but aren't as strict as vegans in their diet. There are also vegetarians who are not absolutely strict with every kind of meat. It's all a shade of gray based on one's individual values.

Vegetarians can consume milk if they choose to.

    Vegans don't.

The reason it's probably not suitable for vegetarians is because it might be produced in a factory where other non-vegetarian products are produced for example.

Well it all depends, not all vegetarians don't drink dairy for one thing (I think all vegans don't though). Even if they're opposed to dairy it's usually because they believe animals shouldn't be held captive for their products or that they suffer. Which probably wouldn't apply to humans.

You can buy human breast milk right now, it's a niche industry. I don't know how the mods would feel about me linking to it, suffice it to say google "buy human breast milk".

This. Go read yogurt containers at the grocery store. Many of them use gelatin in them instead of pectin. Gelatin is made from animal cartilage and can be found in a lot of things you might not think you'd find it in.

Would it be 'suitable' for vegetarians? Yes. However there would be almost no way to produce it on any scale for commercial use.

There's also the factor of social stigma, as well. It's sort of like marrying an adopted sibling. Genetically, there's really nothing wrong, but it's still illegal/taboo for a reason.

    This exactly, too.
It's likely that it did contain gelatin, which definitely isn't suitable for vegetarians.

Gelatin is something one (as a vegetarian) should be well aware of anyway. It is also very often used to fine wine and clear juice.

Im a vegetarian and milk, eggs, cheese etc. are fine. I don't eat anything that requires animals to be killed. And yes, vegetarians eat eggs too. The ones you get from the store arent fertilized anyway, they wouldnt develop into chickens, they'd just rot eventually.

I think only vegans don't eat any animal products, that's completely different.

I don't think I could ever be vegan. Eggs and Cheeses are the best foods in the world.
