Grats! Blizz has confirmed that you no longer need to kill anything specific to get rewards. Just complete the island and you have a chance to get a reward based on whatever mobs were there.

It is quite obnoxious, yeah, but with speed potions and being able to skip about 90% (excluding the Stable mobs, else you'll possibly get fhocked if you just charge the boss) or so of the mobs it only takes around 5 mins to get to him. Can't say I've timed myself on how fast it take me to get to him, though.

Today has been... AMAZING for me and island expo mounts... I still feel like i'm dreaming! The first one I got was the beautiful Island Thunderscale and my all time fav of the mounts;
