Huge FPS drops on good PC.

I recently got a new PC and it's an excellent machine.

At first, it was running WoW amazingly. But then, on the same day, I got both Window's Updates and Blizzard hotfixes. Installed both and now I'm seeing an FPS drop. Everything else seems to run fine, so I'm inclined to believe it was in the hotfixes and not in the Window's Updates.

Going by the Help Request sticky, here is the info I can give you.

All settings are on ultra. (Graphics Settings and here is Advanced Graphics Settings)

Temps are well within normal range.

I've tried going sans-addons and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. At times during 10-man raids with Ultra settings, I'll drop to ~20 fps. When standing on the "porch" of the Shrine, I'll also drop to about ~20 fps. I can only Stream/Video capture on medium-ish settings, whereas before, I could do it just fine on Ultra.

I saw one post of a guy saying it might be that the GPU didn't have enough to do so it was "capping" itself and suggested to the person to download MSI Afterburner. I have Afterburner (came with the PC) but have no idea how to change the settings in it.

I'm really quite computer illiterate, so if responses could be given as dumbed down as possible, that'd be great (lol).

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated!

I haven't really seen anything in the last hotfixes that caused any FPS drops. Can you try removing the Windows updates that you mentioned to see if that helps?

It's possible, but I'd be surprised if this is related to a Windows security update.

What is your CPU utilisation profile when the system is idle in Windows. Are you seeing any heavy utilisation from specific processes?
Do you have anti virus? Check the system.
Are you running the latest drivers?

Try dropping each setting independently to determine what exactly is slowing you down. Often, if a specific one is yielding a large drop it might be telling of the actual issue.

I dunno, id find it odd you would have such slow ram in this system. It would work, but odd....

Can you be more specific on what "normal temps" - I only say this because you said your were quite illiterate.

Did you download a new Video driver through windows update when you updated(these are usually optional, not recommended so you would have to have checked and selected it I think)?

Also check your addons. disable each of them one at a time. If an error occurs while loading one it may cause the drop in framerate. This does not have to happen each time but it could be something along those lines.

Yes, that's correct. If you're using something like Speccy, it shows it as the actual data rate, rather than the "double data rate" (DDR).
DDR3 @ 800mhz = DDR3 1600

I do have anti-virus. It runs every day and never comes up with anything.
According to the NVIDIA tools, all drivers are currently up to date.

The ram thing was actually wrong. I think that was the speed it was running at currently. "DDR 1600" is what it should be.
GPU temp is currently at 31 C.
No Video Drivers were downloaded in my Window's Updates.

Under load? That seems really low.... Its not liquid cooled it is? How did you measure it?

CPU temps? Its more often CPU issues rather then GPU related with wow.

Figured about the ram, just making sure.

DDR3 1600MHz is 800MHz x 2 so it's correct.

Your GPU is stuck in 2d clocks by the looks of it, assuming you're actually in game. Although judging by your CPU temps alone i'm not sure if that's the case. Is WoW actually running in the background (in windowed fullscreen, not shrunk down from fullscreen mode) in this screenshot? If not, an SS of this same page with WoW running in windowed fullscreen would be helpful.

I think you might have hit the hammer on the head. Almost seems like some of the cores are not active, might be clocking down too perhaps.

If it's set to standard full screen mode, it doesn't put any load on your PC when it's in the background. It needs to be in Windowed fullscreen for it to do anything. Otherwise it's just suspended.

edit: well, theres your problem. you have it only set to 1 core. go into the bios and change it to use ALL cores. Also, is Turbo Boost disabled? cause it should be running higher than 3.4ghz with only 1 core enabled.

Yeah. You have 3 cores shut off so you're basically running a single core CPU. Set the Value to <ALL> in the BIOS. It also looks like turbo boost is off, as it should be running at 3.9ghz with only 1 core enabled. So i'd take a look and see if Intel Speedstep and Turbo Boost are on, as well. If they're not on, turn them on.
