will a 9800gt still perform decently??

title says it all. My laptop just crapped out and I want to buy a new computer but I am short on money (only have about 500 bucks) I was going to save but the piece of crap laptop I am using for gaming is driving me crazy. I have 2 old 9800gt video cards lying around and I wanted to know how those would perform until I have enough to buy a decent video card.

I just want to know if it could handle games like wow, rift, dayz, cod on medium settings or not.

It should run the game well enough on a temporary basis while you save up I think. Depends really on what you want it to do, with graphics set on low your fps shouldn't be too bad outside of intense raiding/pvp scenarios with lots of players/npcs and effects on screen. My friend uses a 8800GT which works fine for Random battlegrounds and arena, but struggles in things like world boss raids and LFR.

WoW it should handle quite well, except the newer zones, and I'm not sure on the Cataclysm-redone areas, but it should still do alright.

Rift, you'll probably have to use the low-FX render option, as Rift is a real GPU-murderer, believe it or not.

Dayz I seem to recall being very GPU-dependent, medium, may be fine. CoD, should be fine on medium, maybe.

Also, if you can forego playing at 1080p, your GPU will thank you tremendously.

    That sounds painful.

Would you do it for me?

I was gaming on a system with a 9800gt while I was in the US, it wasn't too shabby, just don't expect miracles. It also depends on the CPU of course.

I had a pair of SLied 8800GTs and have just had to upgrade to a 560Ti.

WoW's majoritatively CPU based and my Q6600 ran well with the setup on Medium.

Within the last 6 months. The 8800GTs are 6 years old.

He might have been questioning your 560ti since it's like 2.5 years since release

I just switched from 9800GT to HD7870. I still keep my old PC, it handles Wow prettly well, just keep the settings low and you should be fine.

I actually was digging around the other day and found a crappy pny energy efficient 9800gt. I threw it in a pretty mediocre computer and it pulled 15-30 fps on pinnacle of storms LFR with medium-lowish settings with a 1680x1050 resolution

I just switched off the GT within 4 months ago. It did fine. Ran ultra when in world, but for world bosses/raids, had to set down to low/medium depending on the size.
