This isn't really new. Far as I'm aware it's a novelty thing.

He doesn't actually have mayoral duties, just a title.

I live in a rural small town in Minnesota, the Mayor's position is not a paid one, and they have no power at all. Its not like large cities where the mayor is important, so I can see this all you have to do is 1 meeting a month and that is in a town of 2000, there is a town 8 miles away and they ahve about 50 people there and the mayor is basically chosen at random and does nothing.

The place doesn't have any sort of government per se. The place is unincorporated, so all government stuff would fall to the county.

"Anyone could vote as many times as they like -- for $1 a vote -- at any of the ballot boxes in stores around town."

Seems like it doesn't really matter who is mayor because of this policy.

Yup, Stubbs, Mayor of Talkeenta, Alaska. Drinks from a wine glass and demands catnip. Such are the duties of a mayor cat.

in the article it says the town has no real governing body, so it's just more of a fun thing and a way to raise a little bit of money

But a policy like this would give the wealthy a major advantage when it comes to running the place.

It is not unheard of for babies, cats, dogs and other 'unsuited' entities to be elected into a high local station as a form of protest.

hartlepool elected hangus the monkey (the football clubs mascot) as their mayor a few years back, a chap dressed as a monkey.
    nothing surprises me anymore.
