What if your best buddy was really bad at WoW?

Prefacing this with I'm 51, and he is 55 years old.... but we are both 8 year players.

He refuses to PUG.... He says it is because he wants all the drops, but I know better. He HATES pugs. Back when he would run them all he did was complain about them. If you were to listen to him, there has never been a good PUG in all of WoW. Really, the deal is that he is so bad that people always yelled at him. So, he always asks me to give him runs with one of my 90's. And because he is my buddy, I almost always do.

But he is just a bad player.... When I run him, I always run him with a healer because I know that he will be dying like 5x per run because he does stupid things.... He also can't focus. I frequently have to type in all caps to get his attention. He doesn't usually read the chat lines. It makes a simple run not so fun. It makes a run take 50% longer.

If he was your best buddy, would you still run him? Or would you run him but tell him that he needs to step up his game if he wants to keep getting runs? Or would you just say "No"?

My friend played WoW for years before I did and when I finally got into the game, (during 3.3) when I told him I finally got into WoW and I hit the level cap, the first thing he asked me was "What's your Gearscore?" Oh god...
He was awful and didn't even know where to go to find out how to gear characters and would put all of his stuff into spirit during Early cata and complain about holy pallies being too weak...
I helped him out by showing him how to do things and demonstrating that I was a healer in a guild that worked on heroic raiding while it was relevant and he thankfully believed me.

I'd give him crap for it in a friendly/funny way and still play with him of course!

I wish my best friend would come back and play.

Hm. I don't really have much personal experience to draw from-- I regularly play Warcraft with my boyfriend, and he is awful, but he knows he's awful and tries not to inconvenience anybody, so he doesn't really pug or do group content unless I gently invite him to come with me and our other friends.

Really, all I can offer is: If it was me and one of my friends, I would tell them that I like playing with them, but that it's less fun when I have to try so hard to get their attention, or when they die so much, and ask them if they could try to focus a bit more just when we're doing group content together.

That said, I don't know the kind of friendship or relationship you two have, which makes it hard to give you a real "guide" as to how to handle it.

There are people who get it and then there are some who should just stick to console.

Eh, I'd still do it. I'd delude myself into thinking they'd improve, but I suppose I'd still do it.

PVP is another issue though. I used to cap 2v2 with a girlfriend a couple of years ago and wanted to kill myself every Wednesday.

My friend sucked, so I spent an entire day teaching him the ins and outs and everything I could possibly imagine about the game, its systems, its resources, and his class specifically. He's decent enough now to play with.

I probably wouldn't waste my time playing with him. If he's a friend in real life we can just hang out there and talk in game or whatever, but I wouldn't play with him. Video games are supposed to be fun, playing with scrubs is never fun whether they're friends or not. Perhaps I'd do BGs or something with him where I can just play around with him but him being bad doesn't matter, but not sure.

I wouldn't do something I don't find fun just because he's my friend, I play games to relax and have fun, not to be pissed off playing with bad players.

I do have a few real life buddies that I play with from time to time in game, that just are not very good at it, one of which even plays the same class and spec that I do. I actually tried for the longest time to give him a hand, and try to help improve his performance, but he just wasn't very good. Honestly, play skill doesn't bother me so much outside of my actual raids, so I really do not have much of an issue playing with less skilled players, especially if they are close friends, and good people .

I think the only thing outside of raids with lesser skilled players that I wouldn't goof around much with, would certainly have to be PvP as Zael said. I can get pretty competitive in that environment. x3

I'm going to preface by saying that in the context of this thread and WoW, "best buddy" would be my dad. I enjoy playing WoW with him, I do some lower level dungeons, have even done some raids with him. However, when it comes to playing and excelling, it isn't quite there. He is by no means really bad, but he isn't quite able to pull the dps for his gear or move out of fire quickly. He is also unfortunately unable to deal with healing or tanking, unless I'm doing the opposite role and there to guide him.

This all really doesn't matter though, I can do raids fine on my own and still have fun in dungeons or lower level raids, tis all cool.
What do you think you know and how do you think you know it?

Are you conscious in the sense of being aware of your own awareness?

I hope that between the ages of 50 and 60 that my only problem in life is if I'm good at a video game or not. Sheezus...

I have had similar experiences where friends in real life played WoW and just didn't do well. I try to help them but they just don't get it, and you cant help them if they simply just don't understand. I would tell you to try to get him to realize he isn't that great and help him understand what he does wrong, and if he is resistant and refuses to listen, then just let it go and let him just do his own things as long as it doesn't affect you.

He's your buddy. If you're not doing anything else why not run him? If he sucks, maybe give him pointers. But to quit playing with him just because he isn't up to your standards seems a little a-holish. Just my opinion.

Tough one this. Does he just have very poor situational awareness? In which case, get him to try the GTFO addon - it gives you very obvious audio warning when you are standing in bad stuff. Maybe he needs to change his keybindings to make movement easier.

Trouble is, if he can't focus, he may be beyond help which must be very frustrating for you. No-one wants to be an asshole, especially not to their best friend, but some people just don't 'get' the game. I have seen some truly bad players, but the best one was a fury warrior who literally spent the whole dungeon doing thunderclap only (and auto hits). He was a really nice guy though, I couldn't be mean to him.

I try to get my girlfriend to cap conquest with me, she won't listen sadly, no matter how much I keep saying we can just go in and hope to faceroll with burst, as BM hunter and ret paladin.

But yeah, the best you can really do is just try your best to help I'd say. I mean my girlfriend and I sucked terribly when we started, but we just slowly learned together...if any of my friends joined now I'm sure they'd learn quickly, since they seem to do well with other game learning curves like DoTA and stuff.

    You're an idiot.

Steve Jobs was 56 when he died.
    Bill Gates is 57

Some of the best software developers are well in to their 50s, having been brought up on real software engineering, not the drag and drop ez-mode today.

    Keep it civil please.
