    https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-ga...tober-01-2013/

    October 1, 2013

Rumors have been gathering—whispers of a menace in the shadows.
Trouble is stirring in Twilight Arbor!

    Events

    TWILIGHT ASSAULT
Lionguard intelligence reports have been pouring in regarding suspicious activities in the Twilight Arbor! Nightmare Courtiers are still pursuing their dark agenda, but now it seems like Scarlet is hatching some new plot as well. The sylvari hero Caithe is troubled by these rumors and has put out a call for heroes to put a stop to Scarlet’s machinations! It’ll take a daring group, armed with sharpened wits and blades, to infiltrate Twilight Arbor and put a stop to the mischief that’s afoot!

A NEW, LEVEL 80 PATH IN TWILIGHT ARBOR
Party up with other players and join Caithe to work your way into a secret facility hidden deep in the shadows of Twilight Arbor. Take out guards, puzzle your way through tricks and traps, and bring down the monster at the pounding heart of the stronghold.

    DEVELOPER LIVESTREAM – SEPTEMBER 30
Explore the Twilight Assault release with ArenaNet devs during the preview livestream on our Twitch channel on Monday, September 30 at 12PM PDT.

    Rewards

    New Achievement Rewards
Show off your prowess with the new Slickpack back item. It glows, it gleams, and it lets the whole world know that you bested the dangers of Twilight Assault! You can also earn yourself an adorable, miniaturized version of one of the most powerful foes you’ll face in your assault on Twilight Arbor.

    Exotic Nightmare Weapons
Foes in the Twilight Arbor explorable mode have a rare chance to drop a new version of the Nightmare weapons. These weapons have a unique name and give off a blue aetherized glow.

    Aether Chests
Across the Maguuma Jungle, players can find Aether Key Pieces. Collect and combine five of these to form a key that will open Aether Chests in the new path of Twilight Arbor.

go away scarlet i don't want you here. get, shoo.
If you are particularly bold, you could use a Shiny Ditto. Do keep in mind though, this will infuriate your opponents due to Ditto's beauty. Please do not use Shiny Ditto. You have been warned.

    I second that motion!

As for constructive things to add to the conversation. If it is a TA addition...I hope this is an explore mode path so I can -at least- get some friggen' tokens from it.

As i recall someone from ANet said that we will have to fight with Scarlet till the end of the year (probably the Thaumanova Reactor fractal will be a conclusion to the whole Aetherblade, Steam creatures, Molten Alliance and Scarlet story).

The current release cycle is 1 update every 2 weeks. So generally one week you'll have a new update and the next week you'll have the preview of the next update, and so on.

I doubt it's going to be anything that definitive, probably just introducing more elements of the world that are not Scarlet Based.

I happen to like Scarlet as a villain, so not worried myself.

Going to leave this here, just...
I think it'll sound really familiar.

The term "Mary Sue" comes from the name of a character created by Paula Smith in 1973 for her parody story "A Trekkie's Tale":15 published in her fanzine Menagerie #2. The story starred Lieutenant Mary Sue ("the youngest Lieutenant in the fleet — only fifteen and a half years old"), and satirized unrealistic Star Trek fan fiction. Such characters were generally original female adolescents who had romantic liaisons with established canonical adult characters, or in some cases were the younger relatives or protégées of those characters. By 1976 Menagerie's editors stated that they disliked such characters, saying:

Mary Sue stories—the adventures of the youngest and smartest ever person to graduate from the academy and ever get a commission at such a tender age. Usually characterized by unprecedented skill in everything from art to zoology, including karate and arm-wrestling. This character can also be found burrowing her way into the good graces/heart/mind of one of the Big Three [Kirk, Spock, and McCoy], if not all three at once. She saves the day by her wit and ability, and, if we are lucky, has the good grace to die at the end, being grieved by the entire ship.
The only thing she hasn't done is have relationships with all five Destiny's Edge members.
And the fact that Mary Sue was a parody of bad writing and fanfiction, but Anet has made it a serious character. It still feels like bad fanfiction though.

She's not really a Mary Sue, anymore than the reams of comic book villains are that have backgrounds like that. Doctor Doom could be reduced to the same form if you wanted. Mary Sue's are generally the savior types that accomplish so much, not villains with "could have done great things, but instead does evil" backgrounds.

Actually, it's much easier to write Mary Sue villain characters and pin them as 'Oh they're great villains' when they're really not. The same rules apply.

-She's graduated from all the colleges in record time, and she's not an asura. Also she's a Sylvari and YOUNGER THAN A SECONDBORN. (I'm going to guess she's anywhere between 5-10 years old.).
-She knows everything about Norn weaponsmithing.
-She knows everything about Charr weaponsmithing.
-She has seemingly unlimited resources to create her weapons.
-Despite the entire world against her, and us being powerful combatants (superhero level), we can't take one Sylvari down.
-She singlehandedly took over the Aetherblades and forged the Molten Alliance.
-She has SEEN THE ETERNAL ALCHEMY WHEN ASURA THOUGHT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. (This is a big one here.)
-She is 'attractive' and 'not scarred up at all' despite having the pulp beaten out of her by 100+ people. Nor is she deterred by this or even -revels- in it. She seems to have no in-character reaction to us at all, really. (I'm aware the scarring/bruising would be hard to reflect, but she should at least be like "I can't believe you guys got all your friends to beat up one little Sylvari.")

Yes, a lot of comic book villains -are- bad, though. Just because they're evil doesn't give them an excuse to be poorly written.

I decided to take her and do the "Fantasy Villain Cliche Test". She scored 67. Here's her score description:

56+: Look, forget it. Please stop making my beloved genre look any more idiotic than it already does. What, do you think writing fantasy is a “Let’s see how hackneyed and trite I can make this…” contest?

If you'd like the chance to try it yourself, go ahead. I doubt she'll score lower than 56 unless you're really trying hard to make her seem great.

Sylvari don't have the same maturation process, so the age really doesn't matter. PC Sylvari are newborn and rise to power quite quickly.

-She knows everything about Norn weaponsmithing.
-She knows everything about Charr weaponsmithing.
Not everything, she was looking for specific information, but yeah, she learned what she wanted within a very short time span, given.

-She has seemingly unlimited resources to create her weapons.

I think that's more about game mechanics rather than a true plotpoint, but sure.

-She singlehandedly took over the Aetherblades and forged the Molten Alliance.
The Molten Alliance was getting a group of Flame Legion and a group of Mole Men working togethor, there's Inquest and Bandits working togethor with no organizer, so I don't really see that as being a big deal. The aetherblades were a group of pirates that she gave advanced tech, afaik they didn't exist as the aetherblades until she formed them.

-She has SEEN THE ETERNAL ALCHEMY WHEN ASURA THOUGHT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE. (This is a big one here.)
She didn't see the Eternal Alchemy, she had a vision that revolved around the Pale Tree trying to get her to comply with the Dream. All Sylvari are connected to the Pale Tree.

-She is 'attractive' and 'not scarred up at all' despite having the pulp beaten out of her by 100+ people. Nor is she deterred by this or even -revels- in it. Again, game mechanics of an MMO, how many times has your character died? Should each time come with a permenant scar or maybe a limp?

Yes, a lot of comic book villains -are- bad, though. Just because they're evil doesn't give them an excuse to be poorly written.
It's fine to not like her, I see her as a nice change of pace in villainy, a Joker/Harley nutjob to keep the scale. Other's want Elder Dragons or similar to be the core world changers, and find it easier to swallow "ancient evil lay dreaming, now wants to wreck things, but somehow your character can kill it with a dagger". I certainly don't want her to be over-used, and hopefully Twilight Arbor will be the only one centered around her. (Assuming a connection between the dungeon and her and the Pale Tree, it can fit.)

I still want a Godzilla, and would like a large tentacled monstrosity that immobolizes with a tentacle. Preferably the latter being in an underwater expansion of an area that also includes a large diving bell shaped helm. We do need a nice methodical power hungry villain as well, but there's plenty of room for Scarlet in the GW2 cosmology.
