Not sure where to post this. Friend of mine is planning on joining WoW and has the following question, which i don't know enough to answer:
"If I buy the MoP expansion ($40 retail, i think?), do I get all previous expansions as well?"
Thanks!

You do not.
You need to buy all of expansions prior to mop + original game.
Buying from Blizzard Store:
20$ battle chest (includes original game + TBC + Wotlk + 1month free)
10$ Cata expansion
40$ Mop expansion
You can buy battle chest and play in current servers, but you wont be able to level past 80 or go to mop/cata zones.
Your friend missed a deal, just a few weeks or so back MoP was 50% off :/

PM me weird stuff :3
No you don't, but you "only" have to buy Classic, Cata and MoP. TBC and WotLK are free.
I would suggest your friend to buy WoW (10$ or smthng) and if he reaches lvl80 too upgrade.
The base game comes with TBC and WotLK, Cataclysm and MoP must be bought separately with MoP requiring Cataclysm.
Great! Thanks for the quick replies, guys. I'll pass this on to him.
EDIT: Yeah i told him about the deal, he was wondering if it would be brought back again. Hehe.
I feel like this is the biggest barrier to entry an that making the newest expansion include all previous ones, while greatly lowering the overall price, will be a lot more conducive to obtaining new subscribers.

Hmm. I hope my friend goes for it! I don't have anyone to play with
Just, don't ever buy from the Blizzard Store.
Lots of retailers sells there for much lower prices, example for the same in EU version on g2play (same thing on many others websites) :
13€ battle chest (EU store : 15€)
4€ Cata (store : 5€)
27€ Mop (store : 35€)
44€ instead of 55€ on store, that's 20% difference (11€) for the exact same products, and they do sales way more often (these are not the lowest price they offered for any of these 3 items) + bonus point system for following purchases (can get a cheaper prepaid 60 days later for example).
Currently not offering US version though, but I'm pretty sure you can find the same deals elsewhere if that's what you're looking for
Best thing to do is just get the base game/battle chest relatively cheap and play with that, he'll be capped at level 80 and can't play a monk but that's about it since they made all races available to all account levels.
I agree. It's really daunting.
To be fair, people don't "have" to purchase it all at once, they can spread out the cost-- starting with the base game, and then adding Cata and Mists as they reach the required levels- but if you want to play, say, a monk, you're shit out of luck.
Maybe it was on offer, but a few weeks ago I got Vanilla, TBC and WotLK with a month of game time for £2.50. Not sure why the prices above are much [i.e. greater than double] higher.
To be honest, I don't really understand the idea that a new player needs to buy all the expansions at the same time. Never have.
Maybe the notion comes from forum posters who utterly despise leveling and therefore recommend having all the expansions right away, so as to speed through them all and hit max-level as fast as humanly possible. Or maybe monks just really are that awesome.
I always figured it'd be more practical to just buy vanilla WoW (which I'm told comes with BC and WotLK) and just play those for a few months. Then get Cataclysm when the times comes. Play that for a while, maybe accumulate some paychecks. Eventually get MoP.
