Post Why isn't the views count updated straight away?

Why is a posts' view count only updated like every few minutes. Sometimes a post can have 0 views for ages then on the next refresh it's all of sudden got 215 in one fell swoop. Why can't I see the actual view count as it is now when I refresh?

There are nearly 12,000 people online right now. 215 people clicking a new thread within a few seconds of each other isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I would assume that it's because retrieving the current view count for every thread on a given page every time any client refreshes a forum index would be an incredible amount of database load that would not provide any benefit for 99% of users.
