[Megathread] Grim Dawn (Hack'n'Slash RPG, from the maker of Titan Quest)

The game is available now on Steam and their webpage.

    About the Game

Classic action role-playing from the lead gameplay designer of Titan Quest! Grim Dawn features satisfying combat, strategic character development, frenzied loot collection and quests with choice and consequence.

Grim Dawn is developed by a small indie team of experienced developers, led by the lead gameplay designer of Titan Quest, using an enhanced version of the Titan Quest engine and tools.

    Key Features

    • Combine any of the distinct skill classes each with multiple skill trees in which to specialize.
    • Fast-paced tactical combat with enemy blood spatters, ragdoll physics and satisfyin enemy death effects. Smash in doors and fight house to house, leaving a path of demolished furniture in your wake.
    • Collect hundreds of items in common, magical, rare, epic and legendary classes of loot. Both randomized rare affix items and custom crafted unique items can provide amazing bonuses and special item-granted skills to support numerous different class builds.
    • Dynamic Weather brings the world to life with region-specific climates and a variety of weather effects. A sunny day can cloud over with mild rainshowers that builds into a booming thunderstorm. Variable wind gusts blow grass and affect objects like windmills.
    • Gameplay systems designed to expand for 200 levels of character progression, equipment, and enemies to fight makes for ridiculous amounts of replay value.
    • Connect with old friends or make new allies in glorious multiplayer. Multiplayer encounters will put your teamwork to the ultimate challenge.
    • Collect item recipes that allow you to combine salvaged components into unique crafted items and then, later, use those basic crafted items with higher-tiered recipes to complete items of unprecedented badassness. (still in development but almost ready to roll out)
    • Camera rotation enhances the three-dimensionality of the world and gameplay while levels are still designed so that players are not forced to rotate the camera.
    • New quest and conversation system will allow players to interact with NPCs in more interesting ways and choose different paths to complete quests.
    • An NPC faction system lets the player improve their relations with different NPC groups to earn rewards as their favor increases such as merchant discounts, new items, and additional quest lines. However, aiding one faction could turn a rival faction into your enemy. Choose which side you will support!
    • The ability to spend money to reclaim skill points alleviates the fear and frustration of having to make early, uninformed decisions that could permanently nerf a character.

Definitely been looking forward to this but it feels like this has been in development forever.

Also, can you put in some links to the website and such OP?

Aaaand it plays exactly like Titan Quest ... i guess it's the same Engine, some of the plant-leaves even look the same, casting animations (at least for bolt-type spells) are the same, upgrade system is exactly the same, the just renamed the fragments/completed versions and modified the values/names. The textures are sharper, a bit more detail added, but it looks like TQ.

    the current classes are:

    Soldier: melee grunt
    demolitionist: your ranged physical class
    occultist: summoner/ranged magic
    nightblade: yeah ...

At level 10 you can choose a second class (just like in TQ), and each combination has a unique name (Occultist and Demolitionist -> Pyromancer)

    a few comparison screenshots:
    Inventory/Vendor

    Skill System

    max zoom in and UI

New quest and conversation system will allow players to interact with NPCs in more interesting ways and choose different paths to complete quests. (Some quests offer choices in Act1 but much more of this is coming in Act2)
haven't found any quests yet that offer a real choice or impact on the game ... there are conversations with multiple possible answers and a few "yes or no" choices and you can always decline a quest (und trhus missing xp and skill points).

At the moment - I'd wait to buy it, unless you really want to support the developer.
There's not a lot in it yet, you'll get to the current max level (25) in about 4 to 5 hours.
I haven't had any crashes or even bugs in the few hours I spent so far and it looks quite polished, but there's just not a lot to do at the moment.

Are still some of the specialisations completely useless?

I've been playing it for a while due to being a KS supporter for it way back.

The game is okay. Basically Grim Dawn plays like a Titan Quest mod.

Very simplistic compared to Path of Exile, but not as shallow as Diablo 3 is about as best I can put it. Yea, it's okay.

that's something you should expect ... it's a "classic" ARPG after all ...

Might give this a try, Titan Quest was one great game, by my standards at least.

what i thought about TL2 after they said what they showed during beta or w.e was the entire first act i kinda figured the game would be short and it was

when it says act II will be a later update i can only imagine it to be a very short game with lots of grind to compensate

As a Kickstarter supporter I've been following this one for over a year now and I am happy where they are now. I see a lot of comparisons made which will ultimately be fruitless because it's essentially a reboot of the idea behind TitanQuest with certain concept changes in order to accommodate their needs and draw from lessons learned. The thing with TQ was that they never got around to fully get it done or the way they wanted it to be due to THQ wanting to get this over with (apparently they thought PC is a dead platform). Crate Entertainment are basically 2-6 Iron Lore devs with added 38 Studio leftovers. I'd also suggest to wait with buying if you are not into playing Alpha versions which it still is as indicated by its feature incompleteness and bugs.

Anyways I personally found the game is okay. I prefer it in some ways over PoE of which I've been a silver supporter and I liked TitanQuest. Still reading the Steam forums it seems the major downside seems to be not being Diablo 2 and not being laid out like Path of Exile which in case it would be then it would be decried as rip-off. So in conclusion it's going to be a fine ARPG.

I doubt it was a planned side effect usually bugs are unwanted but I remember a specific area: It was the infamous Tower of Judgement lag which has been addressed in of the fan patches iirc. So far I have not encountered any lag in GD though.

When will developers stop producing countless revamps of the old games and start making something new and original? Diablo 1 was out in 1995, I believe - and still, 18 years later, they keep making the same game...

The same could be said about any genre, games in general are very iterative (for better or worse).

Yeah, like Activision and EA still keep making Doom revamps. No offense but new and original is not everyone's goal and it's not always the ultimate goal to strive for. Entertainment isn't about always taking the roads not taken, it's about realising your artistic vision and finding the audience for it. It's nice when innovation happens but it's not a button for winning attention and praises. Much of the standardized and concept-proven genres provide stable pillars on which you can base your ideas on. This also means people will instantly feel familiar with the concept with. This becomes even more apparent if a developer feels the direction was right but there was a lot lacking refinement.

But that's beside another thing which isn't entirely the fault of developers either: People tend to narrow down and oversimplify concepts to something they base their nostalgia on. This happens in a lot things related to art and design. It's human but it doesn't mean it's always fair and correct. In this sense TQ and horizontal successor GD are still different but as a whole they do have some differences but as a whole both are different to all Diablo games. I was and still am subscribed to TitanQuest.net and people found new and interesting builds to experiment with even years later. You still have familiarities in gameplay but as with every game it's the differences why people love certain games over others.

What do you mean with that? From what I read they use the same thing.

I know, right. I ask myself the same thing all the time; Yu Suzuki made Out Run in 1986. Why do they keep making race car games?

You're right, I had my minds on PoE for some reason when I wrote that. I corrected that. I've definitely played both though.

This is the same game where you get banned on the forums if you raise any concerns?

I wonder it myself. Never liked 'em.
