It was "Battlefield: Barrens".
It was a short-lived event that started in 5.3 and ended in 5.4. The idea was you would help the Darkspear Revolution by killing Kor'kron, gathering supplies and escorting caravans across the barrens.
There were also some one-off quests where, if Horde, you would defend Sen'jin Village from an attack by Garrosh's forces, then capture Razor Hill for the rebellion.

How can you play a green gnome and fly in barrens?
OT: I've never seen it either. Came back to WoW after 5.4 launched, stopped playing shortly after MoP launch.

It was 5.3 pre 5.4 event. It gave special Feats of Strength and alot of items ^^
