A couple of the companies I've worked for had an on site cafeteria too where you could get a balanced lunch for <$7 and I actually considered that expensive. My usual lunch budget is around $5, so $20 is almost a week's worth of lunches.
2 eggs, coffee and toast at the place across the street costs $10 before tax. Which is "cheap" by most standards for us. Our cafeteria has a soda machine vending bottles for $2, water for $1.65 and juices for $2.35. The little sandwiches [which are not healthy for you...] are $4 and cups of freeze dried soup [also unhealthy] are $1.50 ea.

It's a matter of perspective to some degree. Cash shop prices are not reflective of lifestyle or location. It's just $20 for a mount. No matter your disposition.

I lived in Miami before which was cheaper than NYC, San Francisco and Chicago. But we [me + hubby] made a lot less money in Miami than in those other cities. I haven't lived anywhere else to judge what it is like outside of those places.

To a degree it applies to games too. Some countries pay more or less for digital copies. Even though there is like no need to price gouge like Australia over a digital horsey.

The point being, this digital crap is priced as to what people are willing to pay.

I remember going to a jazz bar in Manhattan 15 years ago. The cover charge was $50. The prices there are ridiculous. A friend of mine lives there and pays $2,000 a month rent for an apartment (compared to here in colorado where I pay 1,000 a month for a place almost twice the size of his)

Serious over reaction. Take a look at what Blizzard is doing with the cash shop on WoW. You pay a 15$ per month sub, need to buy the game and all of expansions and they are constantly charging 25$ for mounts and 10$ for pets.

    Gw2 is totally reasonable.

I used to buy racial changes for the sake of visual pleasure CONSTANTLY on WoW. Easily dropped a couple of hundred to them over my course of playing, not including a pet or two, and server transfers. Never really had a problem giving them my money when it was something that I personally wanted. That, and liking the character I play is a big thing, so being the race I want at the time was fine to me. At no point did I ever go "I already give them 15$ a month!", I purchased an optional thing, that's all on me, all they did was offer it.

God only knows how much money I've given Riot for skins in league..

Good news if you did buy more then one pick of the same sort though.

I bought 8 of each type of gathering tool. Could be in for some nice refunds it would seem. Not sure that I will go for it though unless it's to buy other types of the same items because it's nice an convenient to not have to transfer items between characters.

Except that they are releasing these picks as better than the previous ones. That's the incentive for people to buy. The next item will need to be better than this one in order to sell. Continuous improvement. What are they going to add to the next thing?

I do think GW2 is very reasonable. More than that. I might just buy some gems to support them a bit. I am also happy to pay for new content. Not the content we are seeing but something like a new continent or new zones. I am not into the look stuff so much so I don't see a point in buying things like that. I have a few weapon skins that I have earned. I didn't see a problem with the picks. In fact, I bought one for all of my characters, even the ones I hadn't leveled yet. My concern is about a cash shop item becoming a mandatory item. Yes, you can buy the gems with gold although it sounds like exchange rate has climbed quite a bit now. Ultimately, cash shop items should be items that you have to have like gucci shoes, not have to have like food.

ANet was accused of adding extra currencies into the game to force people into buying more inventory space.

So they release the wallet system.

ANet was accused of putting all the skins behind lockbox gambling, so they changed the BLC system, made the skins tradeable, and haven't released a new BLC skin since Zodiac. They then introduce more skins via direct purchases.

If you're going to cite slippery slope then look at the history of previous allegations.

Haha this game and ANet manage to become even more of a joke every time I check in.

Also I think the new pick costs more, 1000 gems versus 800 gems. It's "better" (because it being better or not really depends on the value you place on sprockets) so it costs more. Pretty simple to me. I think anyone who expected them to never add anything new that might be "better" than previous things was being short sighted. Also zed zebes makes a few good points there. Obviously they want/need to make money. That's just the nature of business. As yet they haven't done anything which makes the game experience horrible if I don't give them money which is a huge things for me.

I think the price difference 800 vs 1000 is due to soulbound vs accountbound. Being able to give your new alt the mining pick is quite a substantial advantage over the previous iteration. The sprockets however are just flavor, they're pretty much worthless.

I thought they changed all the unlimited crafting tools to accountbound awhile ago?

But for someone who leveled alts faster, this could definitely be a big deal. Nice of them to grandfather them in.

the price rise is nothing more then business. The jack in the box one at Halloween was 1000 gems too and it didn't give sprockets.

The sprockets is just theme timing
