Keybinding tips? Too many abilities, too few keys

Hello. My name is Mashugana. And I.....am a Huntard.

I am having trouble getting all the abilities I need as a BM hunter keybound to places I can use them. Could you share what you have keybound where?

I play WASD, so I have 12 keybinds to use:

    1. 1
    2. 2
    3. 3
    4. q
    5. e
    6. z
    7. x
    8. c
    9. v
    10. f
    11. g
    12. r

I think I need to be able to rapidly hit 21 abilities:

    1. Cobra Strike
    2. Serpent Sting
    3. Glaive Toss
    4. Dire Beast
    5. Kill Shot
    6. Arcane Shot
    7. Hunter's Mark
    8. Focus Fire on proc
    9. Murder of Crows
    10. Mend Pet
    11. Pet Attack
    12. Pet Passive/follow
    13. Rapid Fire in AoE to set up Cleave
    14. Stampede
    15. Toss fire trap for AoE fights
    16. Counter Shot
    17. Distracting Shot
    18. Misdirection
    19. Deterrence
    20. Disengage
    21. Feign Death

Those are the abilities I use every time I play - some more often than others, but when I need Deterence or Misdirection, man, I need it right now

And this does not include trinkets, soulstones, pet special attacks, that macro that mocks my friends in raids....

Right now I do not use Murder of Crows or Dire Beast because I seriously do not know what key I would put them on to get into my rotation.

Any tips on how to do this? I admittedly stink at using Alt and Shift in combat (pure keyboard skills). Maybe I just need to build that muscle memory to get more keys? Maybe keys on my mouse? I even tried switching from WASD to ESDF and it only bought me a key or two and gave me a muscle memory aneurysm.

    Thanks for any advice.

Do you have a gaming mouse? If not i recommend the razor naga

It solved all my ability bloat problems

    I use wasd to move

    for keybinds i use

    q
    e
    r
    f
    c
    v
    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7
    8
and 2 middle mouse buttons with mouse wheel press is my push to talk ( voice chats )
then mouse wheel up and down

All of the 1-8 is on the side of my mouse ( i also use Shift and Alt Mods for these for even more skills )

I find F - R - E easy buttons to use Shift and Alt Mods on

With the extra buttons from my mouse i never have a problem keybinding.

Hope some of this helps Cheers

P.s You can also save a few buttons by macroing in PetAttack into some of your main shots - then make your mouse wheel up and down be pet follow and pet passive ( saves a few buttons.

On first sight I don' see anything important missing. Maybe something like Pots, but it's up to you.

You won't be happy with this setup. You need to learn to incorporate modifieres like Shift, Ctrl or Alt.

Additional mouse buttons provide even more freedom (i play with a MX518 - so I have 2 extra buttons, with modifieres -> 8 additional)

I have all my CDs and stuff I dont need to press in a hurry or dangerous situation (deterrence is something I need to press in a dangerous situation) on keys, modified with Shift. Im just used to it.

For pet control I have everything on my mousewheel.

    Mousewheel Press = Mend pet
Alt Mousewheel Press = Heart of the Phoenix
    Attack = Mousewheel Up
Passiv (and therefore "Come back to me") Mouswheel Down
activating assist = Alt Mwheel Up

Furthermore I bound MY movement also to the mousewheel
For example Disengage is Shift - Mwheel Down
and my Engineering-Speedboost (on the Belt) is on Shift Mwheel UP

learn to use modifiers, try to group them accordingly.
For example everything I need (pet summon, mounting etc) out of combat is bound on some sort of common key with an ALT-Modifier.

Another approach would be to switch from WASD to ESDF (see methodwow DOT com/board/showthread.php?10501-Keybinding-Guide-World-of-Warcraft for reference)

hope it helps in some way

~ : A Bestial Wrath macro, which uses my Eng. Perk on Gloves, and a Kill command
1 : A kill command macro that casts BW and Eng. perk, also does /petattack
    2 : Glaive toss/Barrage
    3 : A mouse over macroed multishot
    4 : Kill command
E : Arcane shot with mouse over macro. (RF is macroed to it, so dont have to track this, even if it has a slot)
    R : Cobra Shot
    V : Focus Fire
    F : Serpent Sting
    H : Counter shot
    X : Stampede
Ctrl + Space : Mend Pet
Middle Mouse Button: A Misdirection on focus macro.

These r mostly accessible frequently spammed buttons.

    Shift + F : Deterrence

use blink strike and ToTH so no worries about AMoC and Dire beast (Good Riddance!)

Hunter's mark auto applies, so no need to track. Besides with its long duration u can simply precast on target and ur normal rotation wil keep it up. so no need for a Key bind for it.

  5. #5
Try using shift, ctrl, or alt modifiers and see how they feel. If you can get used to using modifiers, you will find that you will have more key bindings than you can even use. Try to keep your main rotational abilities off modifier keys and use them for abilities you see yourself pressing not more often than 30-45+ seconds. Also, I would highly recommend finding a keybind for healthstone as soon as possible.

This is the majority of mine for you to get an idea. They're not great but it's what I'm used to.

    1.Cobra Strike - 4
    2.Serpent Sting - 7
    3.Glaive Toss - 6
    4.Dire Beast - Shift + E
5.Kill Shot- Alt + 1 (Bound to Naga)
    6.Arcane Shot - 5
7.Hunter's Mark - not needed in PVE, just click it for pre-pull, it's applied passively in fight.
8.Focus Fire on proc - Alt + 2 (on naga again)
9.Murder of Crows - use blink strikes as BM
    10.Mend Pet - Z
11.Pet Attack - Mousewheel Scroll up
    12.Pet Passive/follow- mousewheel scroll down
    13.Rapid Fire - Alt + 4 (naga again)
    14.Stampede - Alt + 5 (naga)
15.Toss fire trap for AoE fights - V
    16.Counter Shot - Shift + 3
    17.Distracting Shot - Alt 7 (naga)
    18.Misdirection - X, shift X also bound to a 2nd MD macro.
    19.Deterrence - Shift + 4
    20.Disengage - F
    21.Feign Death - H

    Extras you haven't listed:

    Bestial Wrath - 1
    Multi-Shot - 2
    Kill Command - 3
    Healthstone - Shift + R
    Binding Arrow - Y
    Frost Trap - Shift + V
    Snake Trap - Shift + C
    Freezing Trap - Alt + 3 (naga)
    Scatter Shot - G
    Camouflage - Shift + Z
    Aspects - F1 - F3
    Pre-pot - Shift + 5
    Tranq Shot - Alt + 6 (naga)
Extra Action Button - Mouse Button 5 (naga)
Engi Belt (nitro boosts) - Shift + D
Engi Cloak (glider) - Mouse Button 4 (naga)
    Auto Attack - T

I woudln't really recommend binding Naga to Alt-modifer like I did as I end up tabbing myself out a lot when spamming mouse buttons and changing targets with tab, just haven't got around to changing it.

Definately start using Shift modifer, it will help you a ton. Easy to reach ones are good to start with like Shift + E/D/F.

Thanks all - I have been considering the Naga for some time. I think that might be an option. I'll also bind some non-emergency abilities to Shift and Alt buttons to try and build a comfort level with those.

And thanks for confirming that, as hunters, we do use a cr@p ton of abilities. I thought I was losing my mind...

  8. #8
i use the ` to 5 using my left hand. together with T as a extra keybind.
rest is on my razer naga. ( get the logitech mmo mouse tho! razer breaks way to easy! )
i counter the ability bloat on my hunter by using shift modifier macro's.

    something like

    #showtooltip
    /cast [mod:shift] Dire Beast ; Cobra strike

the #showtooltip together with the macro icon ?? mimics the icon and tooltip of the active spell.
the /cast [mod:shift] spell 2 ; spell 1 will always show spell 1 untill you hold shift then it shows spell 2 instead.

i put trinkets under these by using /cast [combat] trinket name. so i don't use trinkets ect when not in combat.

also heres my pet macro. a 1 button macro that helps me summon 2 differend pets and handle the pet is dead shit ect.

    #showtooltip
/cast [mod:ctrl] Heart of the Phoenix
    /cast [mod:shift] Call Pet 2
    /cast [nomod,nopet]Call Pet 4
    /cast [nomod,@pet,dead]Revive Pet
    /cast [nomod,@pet,button:1]Mend Pet
    /cast [nomod,@pet,button:2]Dismiss Pet

Just please don't buy the razer naga... if repaired my own razer over 10 times and it's like 1.5 years old-.- i was lucky this is my second naga so i had parts!

Logitech also makes something similar with the same amount of buttons http://gaming.logitech.com/en-us/pro...o-gaming-mouse

Yeah new key binds really comes down to just time, it may feel a bit weird or clunky at first but it becomes natural after awhile.

Currently I have 39 keybinds, none of my naga keys have modifiers but thats someplace I've been thinking of adding more like PvP targets.

Macros can make your life easier but should never include rotation. For example, to reduce having to replace your tier 30 button each time you switch it:

    /cast Binding Arrow
    /cast Wyvern Sting
    /cast Intimidation

if you change to esdf to move instead of wasd you open up more keys to use as binds.

ALT SHIFT and CRTL are what you lack. You problem might be that you try do too many changes at once. Try making 2 new keybinds using these modifiers every week instead of tossing the whole lot into a confusing mess for your brain.

I personally use my CTRL mainly for aoe and situational spells, and my shift for alternative spells (fireball/frostbolt, sheep/spellsteal, blink/evocate etc)

Those keys + mouse with extra buttons + shift (and alt) = all they keys you'll need. Don't know what mouse you use, but alt and shift-binding those buttons, or at least the latter one, can give you a whole host of buttons more so that you don't have to move your fingers from WASD (which I suppose is, in the end, the desired effect).

Yes, and CTRL too, which is a lot more doable than alt. ^^

These are my binds and they work great.

F4-8 are macros for placing marks on the ground, F1-3 are marking Skull, Cross and Star.

I use my #2 action bar too, bound to shift+2. I use this action bar for buffs, portals, pet stuff that isn't used in combat, poisons, you name it. Everything that is generally used outside of combat + mount.

ctrl+§ for the extra action button that can pop up.

    M... M... å, ä, ö, ' are all mouse buttons (6 of them).

It's likely that I'll change 6-9 to shift 1-4 instead. I rarely put spells up there since it's no use to have spells on 6-9 that are used in combat, but I've managed so far with the keybinds I have. Whenever I play something that requires a change, I change my keybinds to adapt. I hope I won't have to change A, D, R or T yet though, because I use those sometimes. (Keyboard turning is great if you're auto-walking and eating or whatever and it makes you look like a pro)

Edit: Oh yeah, the one next to tab is shift+tab.

Used to have the same problem with too few key bindings. Then I started to use all the same but added shift to them, my pinkie saved me!

if you decide to move with the mouse/auto run you can have 2 more keys. backward/forward are useless.

then you can bind your keys to a grid like in starcraft 2

    `12345
    qwert
    asdfg
    zxcvb

minus two of them for right and left strafing.
you can also use shift, ctrl and alt to double/triple etc this amount
i use caps lock to toggle autorun and z and x to strafe
