Asking this for another hunter in my guild.

Is it ever a good idea to use "multi-shot" to apply "serpent sting" on a single target?

They have the thrill of the hunt talent, in case that makes any difference

Not really, serpent sting uses only 15 focus and multi shot 40, so generally it's better to just use serpent sting and have some focus left over ^^

(although I sometimes use it by accident, like misclick or something lol or unless you have thrill of the hunt)

As others said, only with toth. It actually can be a very minor dps increase with the SV 4p to just re-apply it without toth if you get a lock and lock proc very shortly after, but since you can't predict that effectively unless you have a pre-placed frost trap with some adds about to spawn, just apply it manually if you dont have a toth charge.
