Finland drafting legislation to ban cosmetic and religious circumcision.

So this was a fantastic read for me, it's largely a formality as practically it's all but non-existent to mutilate your newborn son in Finland; And hospitals often refuse to perform it bar for medical necessity.

A draft law aimed at banning circumcision has received considerable support from the lawmakers in parliament, reported MTV.

Most of the members in the parliamentary Social Affairs and Health Committee supported the law.

More than half of the members extended their support to either imposing a ban or limiting circumcision.

Some expert ogranisations also supported the proposed law. Circumcision of boys is often associated with religion or culture.

In Finland, most hospitals have refused to carry out circumcision because of religious reasons.

Circumcisions at homes have been subject of suspected assaults. Some prosecutions have resulted to sentences while some have not.
It's sending out a message that mutilating healthy, viable tissue is not ok, and nor will it ever be.

I added a poll to see how GenOT feels on legislation specifically banning circumcision.

This brings up an interesting point. People who are going to want their children circumcised are going to get it done. Would you rather it be done in a sterile, safe environment, or at home with a shot of whiskey, a steak knife and something for the kid to bite down on?

As a finn, who's totally biased, sounds reasonable not to cut off a guy babies foreskin cause of parents.. But if you are really into circumcision, then maybe wait until the child is old enough to make the call themselves...?

    Edit:

Compelling argument actually.. better religious parents have their way at a hospital than at home...

100% agreed, anyone who is conciously willing to mutilate a girl in that way should be locked up for life.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.

The fact that it's even being viewed on a similar level of assault is heartening, to me at least.

I'd much rather give consent myself when old enough, as opposed to having the choice forced upon me and dealing with the consequences of my junk being mutilated without consent.

Besides the obvious - Finland men will not be employed in porn.

What if instead of this, they decided it's stupid to do something that you think should be done - such as poking infants with needles (for vaccinations or any other reasons)?
Or do we allow anything that science says, as long as it's current science ... but then do we allow future science, or is it stupid, and shouldn't be allowed?

Should natural birth be allowed? I'm pretty sure c-section is safer.

I rather have it done as a baby than requiring it to be done when I'm older and shit hurts more/doesn't heal as fast.

Circumcision is wrong and has no more real medical value than female circumcision does even though the latter is viewed as barbaric.
I challenge anyone who doesn't think circumcision is wrong to watch this video

Its not uncommon in some countries and people like to compare male circumcision to female circumcision despite there being a huge difference between the two.

It's almost as if we Europeans (Or Nords) don't make porn... Damn, you Americans are so advanced!

One has a clear medical necessity to protect the child, circumcision is performed largely for cosmetic or religious purposes and bar the child living in Africa and having poor hygiene it will be a complete non-issue.

I heard that most women think uncircumcised penises are gross. I've also heard there is some sensation loss after circumcision. It's a tough call.

conflicted, as the other guy said its better for the hospital to offer a safe way to do it since religious people will still find a way to get it done. but my personal opinion on it is that it shouldn't be done to kids for no reason, but if someone wants to get it done later in life for cosmetic or health reasons thats fine.

Yes, and maybe we should cover ourselves with leeches to suck away the diseases. Obviously we shouldn't use outdated science, that's why it's outdated.

I don't know about the latter, but what a woman thinks is "gross" is going to vary from person to person. I've seen both varieties, and I didn't think either was gross.

I don't get where people get this notion from.

One has skin over it's head and the other doesn't.

What's so ugly about seeing a penis with no skin over it's head?
