A need to have things in the mouth?

I feel a constant need to have something in my mouth, either pens to chew on or anything else. I often sit with my finger(s) in my mouth, biting on them as well if nothing else is available.

Does anyone else have this? Is there a word for this need?

It's called an oral fixation as far as I know. You'll put some really nasty things in your mouth if you're not paying attention.

    something something penis something

put something gross in your mouth if you wanna stop, or don't and keep making your pens an awkward moment for you to have in the future when someone asks you for one

As someone above said, it's called oral fixation. A lot of smokers find it hard to quit, not because they like to smoke - but because of the actions it requires. That's why e-cigs are making such a big boom lately, it provides that oral fixation for smokers while providing a much healthier and public-friendly alternative.

Oral fixation, psych 101. Its one of the few hangovers from Freud that is generally still accepted, along with a general belief in subconscious/unconscious processes. If you haven't taken the course, you should consider it as an elective, psych classes can be fun.

I chewed on erasers when I still was in school and that didn't stop me.

Sounds like anxiety. I always have silly puddy or a pen in my hand to keep me busy, so I don't twirl my hair.

Personally, I think it's a superior genetic trait.

Not that I can recall, would have to ask my parents. Could that cause it?

I've known people that are like this.

Mine is that I bounce my leg constantly while I'm sitting. Not my foot, my entire leg. It has the side effect of making my leg, knee & lower back pretty sore/tired/uncomfortable, but I always start again the moment I stop focusing on not doing it. I also can't help but move my hands when I talk, which is not a good habit because it distracts people from what you're saying.

I don't think it has to do with stress or anxiety to do. It's just there whenever I'm awake, not feeling anxious or stressed.

    Oral fixations are not uncommon.
Human progress isn't measured by industry. It's measured by the value you place on a life.

    Just, be kind.

Come to think of it, when she was younger my sister used to chew on the feet of her Barbie dolls when she watched tv. Think she gave it up though. lol

Dunno, just wondering since early stuff might get ingrained in people. I do know that my mother rocked me a lot as a baby and young child and sometimes when I'm on the computer really late and am getting tired I realize I'm sitting here rocking ever so slightly. Really think it may go back to that. lol
