Grinning Reaver (Ravager mount) gifs and some explanations.

    Hey there.

I have taken the liberty of making some gifs to show the difference between the Silithidtank/Qiraji Battle Tank model and skeleton, and that of the Ravager2mount, aka Grinning Reaver skeleton and model. So without any further ado, I will go ahead and list the animation gifs here.

    Ravager2mount animations:

Bonus standing animation: http://i.minus.com/ibvqhIhb5YgMka.gif (completely unique. Silithid doesn't have it.)
Walking animation: http://i.minus.com/iliUgsqyS1gum.gif (for the most part, old. But modified to be smoother)
Running animation: http://i.minus.com/ib1lK4VXr2GvUo.gif (same. There is a difference, though. You'll see.)
Battleroar animation: http://i.minus.com/iUyitwOFgIgFY.gif (same. Could be modified to be smoother.)
Death animation: http://i.minus.com/igCuTbvy40jPO.gif (same, but looks more graceful in my eyes; probably modified)
Flightidle animation: http://i.minus.com/ibwWkrpgY1Lx1h.gif (obviously, completely new)
Flightrun animation: http://i.minus.com/ib0b8qeEebTtxc.gif (also obviously new)
Swimming animation: http://i.minus.com/iJEFmfgzvLequ.gif (general animation is same but smoother + wing and mandible anim.)
Attack animation: http://i.minus.com/iH9TROMwTUUIT.gif (similar principle as silithid attack, but certainly different animation. That much is obvious.)

    Silithid animations:

    Bonus standing animation: http://i.minus.com/ibrMJFsAG4ZLST.gif
Walking animation: http://i.minus.com/ibxHeqbBAROEmp.gif (face down, ass down. Less smooth, seems to slide rather than walk)
Running animation: http://i.minus.com/ibd0ffVebgBkh6.gif (less smooth, seems to glide across ground, not run)
    Battleroar animation: http://i.minus.com/iNq0yyHrCjam1.gif
    Death animation: http://i.minus.com/ice8Xfj6aUZhw.gif
    Swimming animation: http://i.minus.com/ibnaNxEoV1Tcnm.gif
    Attack animation 1: http://i.minus.com/iLUp2fKi4NdOK.gif
    Attack animation 2: http://i.minus.com/iDESsJ4K700lb.gif

    Conclusion:

Claims of "lazy" are completely unfounded and unfair. This new ravager mount is not a literal skeletal copy-paste with a new model. Even if it was, that would have been a big job. But it is the second largest and second most intensive/extensive task for 3D artists that was involved here. No, they didn't grab a new skeleton because they knew it had to behave roughly like an already existing creature does (the silithid), but they also certainly didn't just stuff a silithid skeleton on to the model and call it a day. Like the Pterodactyl mount that they created using the Proto-drake mount skeleton as base, they modified existing animations to be less choppy, more lively and well-animated, and added new animations altogether in many cases. Of course that is obvious for the flying, but there are also other new animations.

Case in point: the running is similar, but there is no way it wasn't modified. The silithid's animation isn't particularly great compared to the ravager's. You can see the ravager actually set the steps, while the silithid glides across the ground. Not that I'm trying to bash the animators of that time because WoW was different then, and the models were of lesser quality for good reasons, not because the animators and modelers were bad.

In summary: think before you hit that reply button and accuse Blizzard of "lol just lazy reskin lololo blizzard selling out".

    This is a good comparison.
It's a shame we can't display them side to side, but that would make your post far too big I suppose :P

Also, you embedded the same image for both swimming animations.

Wonder what's needed to obtain these mounts

Now only if we could take that appalling helm off the mount version.

I noticed. I fixed it while you were making that post, probably. And yeah, I would use [img] tags on them to compare them side-to-side, but that would make the post too big and lag out. They are already quite intensive to load on a separate page (for me, at least), so having them all on one page in a thread would probably make it really hard for people to browse.

I too think Blizzard often slaps a lot of armour on mounts lately that they don't need and that just detracts from the mount model itself. While I'm not a -huge- fan of the mount armour, I still love the ravager, and it's still one of the most awesome mounts in years for me. Luckily, I can also tame an armor-less pet version in WoD or after WoD. (in case I'm not gonna play WoD, which might be possible)

Here is a picture someone took of a version with the armour models stripped.
It'll almost certainly be the one you can tame, hopefully there will be a version you can ride too.

One thing I did notice is that it appears to have straps on its texture binding its wing cases closed... but then it opens them anyway. Oops!

Mine has the armour stripped, too. Partially because the armour is bugged for my modelviewer (textures are separate files and won't load), and because the armour looks a bit too overwhelming. I think you can appreciate it a lot more without.

I'm certain that that isn't the hunter pet version, though. Firstly, there'll probably be multiple colours of these for hunters to tame, and also, the textures of the mounts have these bandages textured on top of them, as well as shadows/black spots to act as shadowing from the armour. There will probably be a separate beast version texture with the bandage and shadow parts removed that will come in different colours. Well, not probably. Almost certainly.

Your picture and my gifs are basically the mount textures and mount model with the armor geosets turned off. For beasts, they make textures without all the stuff like bandages.

Oh yeah, I just meant "one without armour will probably be tamable" not "this one exactly".
They might have to tweak the bandages even on the armoured one, given that they should logically prevent it from flying but don't >_>

Ah, yeah. There is the possibility that there will be a tameable armoured version, but the chance is slim. They're not fond of us taming armoured pets.

nice post, but the question still remains, how does one get it?

Thats obviously a head off of a Ravager, so maybe it's a Neutral Faction Mount, probably based in Tanaan Jungle, since in our universe (Hellfire) that's where ravagers seem to be

or probably just going to be chucked on the store instead to make some quick profit because of people leaving, coz SoO is old/smelly/something

    It's indeed a ravager. : b

But yeah, we don't know what's happening with it yet. But I can't blame you for having the nagging feeling that it might be a store mount. Given the level 20 requirement (something shop mounts share), and it changing depending on your mount training.

yea, im afraid it is going to be a store mount, since 5.4.8 is still pandaria, there are no draenor stuff. prolly be the same thing as sky reaver

The worst part is that I can't even be mad about it, as I'll be too happy that I finally have it to get angry that I had to pay for it. This is the first store mount in a long time that I would buy, and the first mount where I would not have any regrets because of me buying it.

Yep, if it's going to be a store mount, and that Red Iron Horse-thing is also a store mount, i'm going to write something really nice for them at forums.

I certainly wouldn't be a fan either. But I think I'd prefer it being a store mount over it being a mount I can't obtain because it's.. say.. a heroic, or limited time rare mount that depends on RNG. I would feel bad if I missed out on it in any way. :v

Also, I was grabbing this picture for someone at the Petopia forums anyway, so I may as well share.

Silithids suffer from no-mouth syndrome. That is that they have mandibles, but they have nothing that leads to.. well, a mouth or anything. It's just a flat block of blackish nothing, which made a lot of people wonder how they ate if there is no hole there to put the food in.

They have .. sorta solved that problem with the ravager. Not as a part of the model, but as a part of the textures. And it's sorta..

    It's sorta.. well,

    Cute in a silly way.
