The Witcher 2 bored me something fierce.
Skyrim on the other hand I sunk over 200hrs into.
Each to their own I guess.

Bow down before our new furry overlords!
It's hard to beat a fully modded Skyrim, The Witcher 3 will beat skyrim in story and characters for sure not sure about the open world bit yet though.
I'd argue against chosing winner at all - I don't think there is rpg throne at all. My beloved rpg genre boasts massive variety of games - last few years were quite awesome between Skyrim, Dragon Ages, Mass Effects, Witchers, Dark Souls, Fallouts and others. We have sandboxes, action base combat systems, tactical combat systems, single character or group. Story driven games and ones where lore is background to actual gameplay.
I believe we should cherish and encourage such variety - it's what makes rpg genre amazing. I'm quite sure I'll love Witcher 3 and Dragon Age: Inquisition and it won't in the slightest diminish my love for Skyrim or Morrowind or Baldur's Gate etc.
edit - Unless op means sales - then no, I doubt we will see Skyrim dethroned anytime soon :p

I been suckered to thinking Watch dogs was gonna be the best game ever from e3 trailers. But i was furious with the crappy graphics and the only way i can tell if its good im gonna have to wait till the game gets released.
I recall the devs saying it will be open world, but not as open as Skyrim is. Though that was a year ago so not sure if they have changed their plans.
Um, the fact that the Witcher series and Skyrim are different subgenres of RPGs. They are not in the same competition space any more than Forza Motorsport is competing with either. But let's talk, what do you think distinguishes them most[?]
Similarly The Witcher 3 and Skyrim share a fantasy setting in a single player RPG.
Skyrim isn't even the best part in the Elder Scrolls series, so how can it be on any throne? Also, comparing these games is silly, they aren't even the same type of RPG.
The Witcher 3 will probably not beat Skyrim in sales, since the Elder Scrolls has a huge fanbase it built over the years, The Witcher is still gaining popularity though, so we might be surprised.
Either way, I would take the Witcher series over the Elder Scrolls any day, no doubt about that.
I would be wary about boarding hype trains as they have a tendency to derail. I am psyched for witcher 3 but I would be foolish to expect it be as good as a modded skyrim. People need to manage their expectations for new releases, history shows us most boasts or promises to be exaggerated and often people see what they want to see.
Had never heard of the Witcher series before...but it does look very nice.
Tho about it beating the sales of Skyrim is fairly low and would probably say that the Witcher 3 won't beat it. Tho it might be very successful and so I hope.
The comparison of these two games is stupid. One is a open world game with focus on freedom and immersion, the other is more of ARPG with focus on a fixed main character story (Geralt) and combat. Apples and Oranges really.
I have played both games extensively and the only similarity they share is that they're medieval style RPGs with plenty of story and dialogue. Other than that, they're worlds apart.
So what if W3 dethrones Skyrim? I would have no problem with that given that both CDP and Bethesda are two of my favorite developers. It's not like Bethesda is resting on its laurels and not busy making Fallout 4 as we speak.
When we looked at the relics of the precursors, we saw the height civilization can attain.
When we looked at their ruins, we marked the danger of that height.

The Witcher 2 was a much better experience (but also much shorter) because of the somewhat linear story.
The Witcher 3 is planned to bring the open world of Skyrim or AC black flag and if they somehow manage to make the world just as excellent as The Witcher 2 but in the larger format, then there's no doubt in my mind that it will overthrow Skyrim.
The witcher 3 will be the better game, may not come out on top with sales but it will be continuing the legacy of the witcher series, possibly pushing it past The elders scrolls series in years to come.
I'm a huge Skyrim fan, but I want Witcher 3 to be better, just because no one wins if it isn't. Take notes from Skyrim, make your game better, and then ES6 can take notes from your game and make an even better game... and keep it going so gamers can always enjoy great games.
Dethrone what exactly?
Skyrim's a huge lake with the depth of a puddle. Sure, the world is big. Sure, the quests are many.
But the hardcore RPG elements are lacking.
It has like 10 voice actors ( seriously, I think there are 2 voices for males in the whole game ), it has no memorable characters, it has blocky faces and the oh-god-why typical Bethesda combat.
Sure, it's moddable. But that does not excuse the laziness of the ones that made it.
The Witcher 2 is a superior RPG and The Witcher 3 seems to be headed the same way.
Dethroned as what? This thread is absurd.
