Best CPU and Motherboard for under 300

As the title says im trying to find the best CPU and Motherboard for at or under 300 dollars. Im not too worried about overclocking and all that jazz, I just really need to upgrade my AMD athlon x4 640 processor and im kinda dumb when it comes to this stuff.

You're probably going to need more than that if you're running that CPU. Ram, maybe a video card, PSU, etc.

Tom's Hardware best CPU for the money. Only thing I'd worry about is PSU but if you're running a 760 ok, you might be good. That should come out to just under 300.

That should be fine. But I'd consider saving up for a decent overclockable quad core, maybe more ram and a motherboard that allows for some future upgrades. Consoles just hit next gen so that opens up PC to shiny new hardware-raping technology.

    What's your current RAM?

Assuming you don't need to replace that, then this combo is pretty good:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Core i5-4690 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($214.99 @ NCIX US)
    Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($76.66 @ Newegg)
    Total: $291.65
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
