As they do for all races. But we don't consider the KirinTor and Dalaran Humans and Kul Tiras humans and Stormwind humans and Paladins and Stormwind mages and so on to be different racial groupings simply because they have different allegiances. They are simply "humans".
...they've been part and parcel of the Alliance story ever since WC2 and have been that way in WOW ever since Vanilla.Elves that are Alliance just because...
There is a strong link there no matter how you want to downplay it. And like other such races, people want to play them. That's why we also get occasional calls for the Tol'vir or Naga or Arrakoa or Ogres.
Even if that argument had any merit to it - and it doesn't - there isn't anything to suggest that High Elfs couldn't be given such as part of their assimilation into the game as a player race.. Obviously you like Elves (and I say "you" in a larger sense, in order to exemplify this perspective), and you prefer them themed as a classic Alliance race, so you are bargaining for this to happen in whatever way possible, even if it's a poor product (you can argue that Pandaren were also able to choose their faction like this, but Pandaren already had an entire continent worth of assets and story, not counting the wandering isle, so they could be token adventurers and still have identity and depth; all classic High Elf land and assets are currently linked to Blood Elves, perhaps with the exception of Dalaran which has already served as a neutral hub for the expansion that introduced it, and was supposed to be a Human city; High Elves don't have any lore assets of their own, they would instead have to butt in over someone else's space - QT, Dal, SW - just to be playable, and it's not worth it).
Because Lorthemar didn't like the way they weren't becoming mana vampires. When and why?
Willpower. Pure and simple. Like other Thalassians, they felt the addiction - but they were able to resist. Also, how were they able to deal with their magic addiction if they did not partake of Kaelthas's "sources"? Because the original story had the Blood Elves in very dire straits, and retconning a group of Elves who could simply abstain from magic, or found some conveniently pure source (couldn't be Dalaran after the events in TFT), simply diminishes its impact.
What does that matter? The ingame model is nothing more than a visual representation of the race, and a way to give it some form of visual identity. If its important that the BElfs keep their current unique identity, even with Alliance HElfs, then giving HElfs a new look accomplishes that. It's not as if every single BElf in existence has the same body type. They are the same race... What, would High elves lean to the other side?
