you cant compare things like FF7 or Nolan's movies to WoW budget wise...FF is a proven series, Nolan is...Nolan.

Just as an example - when Justin Lin took over Fast & Furious, he was coming out of film school with 0 experience. so dont juts dismiss Duncan Jones. He did direct Source Code which was a bit extravagant, but still enjoyable.

Warcraft's success depends a lot on making an accessible movie - they will probably put something very very small where wow geeks will freak out, but in general you want the audience to understand everything.

What I would like to see is - statistically WoW has had over 100 million unique players(infographic released by blizzard). assuming 99% of these people have had an interest in the game, and have $20 for a ticket and popcorn, how strong would the opening weekend be? because if every single person that has played wow shows up during opening weekend/week, that would be insane to read about in the papers.

Something key to take from the teaser is that they didn't use the Warcraft logo for the movie title graphic. This will undoubtedly be in the vein of Transformers, Spirits Within, Wing Commander, Dungeons&Dragons and so many other franchise adaptations. It will only loosely be based on the source franchise in order to be able to sell it to the general public.

That's not what everyone else said who saw the trailer. They were blown away by the realistic view of some Azeroth places. It just looked like they remembered it from the game. Like the thrown room.

It surprises me that no copies made it outside of the preview room, but the few people who saw it were impressed with the CGI tuned sceneries.

Present day technology is at the right point to make it happen. So it is quite clear scenes like Stormwinds Cathedral etc can be CGI recreated in an awesome way. Again those games you cited did NOT have a consistent open world play like Azeroth had over the past decade.

What do you expect ? Some cardboard walls like a Star Trek episode from the 60's LOL ?

The giant number of (ex) players who invested HUGE amount of their life time is there, the well known franchise is there, the consistent 3D open world of Azeroth is there, the Director is there, the Computer assisted technique is there.

Like somebody said: the opening weekend alone will be a mind blowing revenue hit: 10 million spending 20 dollars to just see the movie they will be teased with for 1 full year.

A LOT of people will return to play the game afterwards. I hope Blizzard is prepared by then. It could be a desperate year for Warcraft haters, nice.

No offense, but are you stupid? They're starting at the events of the first game so that if it is a success, the sequels will have a very obvious direction to take. Starting a potential franchise with a story line for WCIII is pointless, and will only please fans of the Arthas-related stuff. Also, the amount of exposition and boring narration would increase the film to 5 hours. Starting fresh during the FIRST War will gives the same experience people add when playing the game-Discovering a new world and learning all about these characters from the beginning.
When Warcraft releases, the general public can enjoy it for being a new fantasy/sci-fi film, while Warcraft game fans can enjoy how they've brought the world to cinematic life, and can fangasm over their favourite lore characters in the flesh.

Four months is probably a good guess really. Anyone I worked with who played it dropped it after a couple months, before getting into any part of the game WoW is recognized at succeeding at, and said they just didn't have the time for the game. For many people it was their first and last MMO, and it doesn't take years to figure out that an MMO won't fit your life style.

The World of Warcraft is recognized more by it's South Park satire than by any real game play. Something anyone would know if they went outside and talked to people about it. If the movie tries to rely on it's game fan base to bring in cash it will fail hard. If it tries to bank on the lore and story found in the games it will drop like a stone. The movie needs to be good on it's own merit, that's the end of it.

That would be great and i hate to belabor the point but why would the 93 million people who tried the game and did not like it or played it long enough to not like it rush the see the film? Would you go to see a film about a game you don't like? Since wow subs did not jump up tens of millions sub each year most of that 100 million would have been the free trial.

I really hope the film does well but 100 million screaming fans rushing to see the film on the opening weekend is a pipe dream.

Thank you. you are like the only sensible person in this whole thread. This movie won't suck because they are not using the warcraft OG logo or that they are not faithful to warcraft as an adaptation. This movie will suck if the script sucks, screenplay is lame, pace is awkward, or any other actual movie related problems.

The oceans movies were good. You also have the valentines day, xmas eve movies with lots of big name actors. Batman series as well. It all depends on whether the actors/actresses can put their ego aside and really get into character for a movie.

I really doubt it. I believe the director, who also rewrote the script, is a fan of the games so he's going to be faithful, but probably add a few changes to have it appeal to non-Warcraft fans. Apparently one such change is that we will have currently unnamed Human and Orc characters who will most likely act as audience surrogates.

Just have faith in the film-there are many talented people in the cast, and ILM is working on the CGI (among others).

A Budget of over $100 Million
    Legendary Pictures who are behind
    • Latest Batman
    • 300
    • Watchmen
    • Inception
    • Pacific Rim
    • Man of Steel

Amongst other Big blockbusters, so it is doubtful that this will turn into a turkey.
Plenty of really expensive movies that ended up as Meh.

    Alien: Prometheus
    Thor: The Dark
    Ironman 3
