It's really not that surprising. There are very few teams between 1800-2200 that play as a team consistently. Most teams from 0-1800 are just randoms on oQueue, and most people that form teams and play every day or a few times a week are over 2200, because those teams can easily stomp out randoms from oQueue.

Kind of how it goes with RBGs, too much of a hassle to set up consistently with good players unless you treat it like a raid and have scheduled times for things.

What does that have to do with anything? It's not like a group of guildies can't get a game against a pug from oQueue

It has to do with the fact that there aren't many 1800+ MMR teams. So if you're playing at weird hours, like the OP said he was, odds are good there aren't many decent rated teams queueing, which leaves you with either 1800 teams, or 2200+ teams, since there aren't many in the middle to begin with. So if the other 1800 teams are playing each other, and you're stuck in queue for a while, you'll most likely play against a very high rated team.

If it was like 1500 MMR then it wouldn't be such a big gap, because there are a lot of 1400-1600 MMR oQueue groups.

The matchmaking system should include the ability to wake up an entire team in your MMR so you can play a game, tbh. Yeah GG Blizz, system borked!
