    "Womyn"

Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed a trend on my facebook page that a lot of my friends (I mean, I guess they're friends... I have them on facebook) are using the term "womyn" to replace "woman" and "women". What's the reason for it?

    Bullshit is the reason.

    Total.

    Bullshit.

    It's an extremist thing.

Writers who use alternative spellings see them as an expression of female independence and a repudiation of traditions that define females by reference to a male norm.
    Wikipedia.
It doesn't have the ghastly MAN in it because womyn be independent blah blah, or, lets say, because they're nuts.

It's an attempt by the more radical edge of the feminist movement to remove any association with "men" from "women's issues". By changing the "a" or "e" to a "y", they're no longer identifying as a subset of "man". In short, it's sexism against males.

Based on past threads about certain Facebook options, I'm pretty sure them condoning this type of shit is good for business.

Why is it trending on your facebook friends' feeds? Because they recently discovered it and are friends with each other. It's new and fun to them. I doubt that any one of them is really that attached to any radical feminist movement or has read much of any of the poststructuralist literature that this term arose within.

The root word in "woman" is "man." Militant feminists don't like that, you see. This deliberate misspelling ("womyn") is an attempt to escape reality.
