Over the last couple of weeks I've noticed a trend on my facebook page that a lot of my friends (I mean, I guess they're friends... I have them on facebook) are using the term "womyn" to replace "woman" and "women". What's the reason for it?

It's an attempt by the more radical edge of the feminist movement to remove any association with "men" from "women's issues". By changing the "a" or "e" to a "y", they're no longer identifying as a subset of "man". In short, it's sexism against males.

It's an attempt to generate further disharmony between the sexes.
Why is it trending on your facebook friends' feeds? Because they recently discovered it and are friends with each other. It's new and fun to them. I doubt that any one of them is really that attached to any radical feminist movement or has read much of any of the poststructuralist literature that this term arose within.
The root word in "woman" is "man." Militant feminists don't like that, you see. This deliberate misspelling ("womyn") is an attempt to escape reality.
