Eh, there are still a number that aren't doing this type of thing. TERA is still quite solid with its business model, so is Aion (NA, at least). Then there's stuff like TSW/GW2 which have cash shops which aren't bad.

But yeah, I'm not a fan of the direction Trion has been going for a while now. During the first few years of Rift I was absolutely one of their most vocal supporters, as I felt they were essentially the "gold standard" for how a company should support its game and community. But ever since things started blowing up in their face (Defiance tanking, End of Nations being a giant burning pit of money, etc.), they've taken a dramatic turn. I mean, it's expected, but it's still disappointing as hell : (

I do not mind the Rift cash shop. Though I rarely play since NT due to disinterest. Rift is still well made but it's rather ho-hum. Nothing truly interesting or exciting.

The game for me is an almost perfect parallel to Lord of the Rings Online; well made game, not terribly exciting development or design. It functions as it should for the most part with little overly remarkable, controversial or press worthy.

Did not like Tera when I played it, nor Aion. TSW was okish but was not a fan of GW2 at all.

You also forgot to mention ArcheAge. While not entirely Trions fault as XLGames is the dev, they have had problem after problem in that game. Recently, some servers were down for 5 DAYS STRAIGHT.

Looks like they either stealth nerfed minion artifact rewards, or their "fix" broke the fuck out of it. Because I went from getting 4+ artifacts for a 4-5 star completion, to just a single one. Yay.

So...does that mean they're un-stealth nerfing artifact mission rewards for minions?

I don't get the P2W QQ, the game is entirely free and I doubt they have that many subs.

Gotta make money somehow and you can still just grind the unlocks out with plat or void stones or w/e. Anything can be purchased or unlocked by playing the game, and it don't take thaaat long especially if you've been hoarding plat for ages.

I can see a concern for newer players but seeing these vets kick and scream P2W is kinda funny...

It takes me 10x longer to make gold in GW2 to exchange for gems, not that I would because it's a waste of time and their gem shop sucks major dicks but hey.. it could be worse in Rift.

Maybe someone could point out a better F2P MMO that isn't trying to stick their hands in your wallet 24/7 but I doubt it.

I did not see anyone mention P2W until you did. Fact remains, they are integrating the cash shop in to progression more and more. That's still not P2W, just Pay 2 get there faster. The thing is, IMO, progression should not be tied to the cash shop at all. Souls are one thing, equipment slot unlock are getting pretty bad, now the fact that you gotta have patron to increase weekly caps? Getting a bit over the top. Not P2W, no, but still. I mean sure, you can say you can buy it all with Plat but for some people, that's not an option. Personally, I have never been very good at making money in games. That's probably due to the fact that I want to log on, play and and log out. Not log on, spend time doing things I don't like(trying to find ways to make money) then logging out. Some of us have pretty limited time to play, after working 50+ hours a week then coming home and spending time with my daughter, that leaves me a couple hours to myself each night before bed. I like to keep caught up on some TV Shows and Anime as well as playing D&D a couple nights a week(DMing one game so need prep time as well), so that really cuts my playing time down. I'd rather not have to log in and say, sorry guys, can't raid tonight, gotta go farm.

So yeah, not P2W, but P2W at a reasonable pace. Prior to this expansion, the game was paced to play without having the sub, then if you got the sub, you got there faster. Now the game seems paced to play with having the sub and if you do not have it, you get there very slowly. Minor difference, I know, but it's there. On top of that, if I want to be able to raid, gotta have those equipment slots unlocked so either need to give up doing what I enjoy to farm or pay up, on top of the sub. It's just getting to be too much.

I can't point out another F2P MMO that is better either though. I realize F2P is the future of online gaming, it just seemed to me the way it was handled in SL was right and they are moving more towards wrong.

I prefer B2P being the future of online gaming rather than F2P. Usually people will at least pay the initial box price, and I would think that makes devs more money.

I think gamers these days expect far too much for free because F2P is popular now, but if devs don't make money then there is gonna be problems and if you ask me Trion is hurting when they integrate so much into cash shop.

I agree it is not cool but I must have got my threads mixed up or assumed you guys were with the P2W group. It is all over the official forums like the plague and everywhere I look Rift is apparently 'P2W' now.. lawl

PS: I love how Daglar is Rifts version of Ghostcrawler.

B2P does not make more money, that's why so few games do it. Sub model is better for devs then B2P because in a sub model, like WoW or FFXIV, you buy the game then pay a sub too. How could B2P possibly make more money than that, unless they came out with practically required DLC weekly? GW2 and D3 are really the only B2P games that do well for themselves I can think of.

Because B2P games are monetized almost exactly like F2P? They have cash shops too, you know. And D3 isn't a MMO, it's simply an online game (with forced always online DRM), so not really B2P in the same sense as a MMO like GW1/2 or TSW.

Ah, have not played too many B2P MMOs. I realize D3 is not an MMO, never said it was. Just said it's the one of the only B2P games I know of that really does well for itself. I kinda forgot GW2 has a cash shop as well.

  15. #35
Almost all B2P games do well for themselves... because the majority of games sold are B2P. It is the oldest, longest running and most collectively profitable method of video game sales.

Games like FF14 and World of Warcraft are technically both B2P and sub based. The latter payment method actually being a kind of lease for play time.
