Introducing the Overwolf Guild Wars 2 App Challenge - $15,000 in prizes

Introducing the Overwolf Guild Wars 2 App Challenge

by The Guild Wars 2 Team on Februar 25, 2015

Last year we worked with Overwolf, the company behind the Overwolf overlay software, to organize the Guild Wars 2 WvW App Challenge, the Overwolf WvW Streaming Contest, and the Overwolf WvW War Reporter Contest. They generated a lot of interesting applications, such as Rush Box, Markers, and GW2 Monster Hunter.

Today we’re partnering again with Overwolf to launch the Guild Wars 2 App Challenge. This time, application developers will have three months to work on their overlay, and they can make any Guild Wars 2 application they can imagine! It’s also another opportunity to use the Guild Wars 2 API to create more interactive and dynamic applications.

We have an exciting pool of prizes, with $15,000 USD to share in three categories: General, Competitive, and Player Experience. The Content Marketing team will be judging applications with the help of a few other employees at the studio.

Head over to the Guild Wars 2 App Challenge contest page to learn more and sign up now! Also make sure to engage with the Overwolf team and other developers on the Guild Wars 2 and Overwolf forums.

The Overwolf Guild Wars 2 App Challenge is ongoing! We’ve partnered with the creators behind the Overwolf software overlay to organize this contest, and you still have time to get your submission in before the May 15 deadline.

In addition to the over $15,000 USD in prizes being offered, developers of the top 20 apps will receive an Endless Interface Crafter Golem Tonic to show off their coding expertise in game. If you’d like help with ideas or coding, or if you simply want to discuss API development and the Overwolf App Challenge with other players, visit the official API development subforum.

Need inspiration? Check out the following video, which showcases three of the amazing apps submitted so far:

    Good luck, and happy developing!

Wait... So gw2 does have addons?

No, it doesn't. But it does have an API, letting others create external apps/overlays utilizing the API to display information in alternate ways.

These are overlays - they pull the data from the API, not your game. It's the same info that can be pulled and presented in a variety of ways on hundreds of different websites.

Most of the major WvW guilds that I know use some form of a WvW overlay - it's the difference between running across the map to find a 2 min RI on a camp vs being able to flip it immediately. But lots of apps are coming now, also they are making some huge changes to the kinds of data revealed in the API (which you can follow on the API forum).

So where would one go to get these overlays?

Nope! not overwolf, never saw such a resource drain. And the constant "do you want to install X with it" everytime you click next during install is just a big nope for me. Great idea, to bad they use Overwolf :-(

I've never had an issue with it, always installed it through Teamspeak and love it for Teamspeak.

I used to use some of the apps/overlays like the one that tracked timers and daily CDs and one for WvW timers. The browser goes well with GW2s /wiki command.
