I think cutting them back actually helps them flower. I had a rose bush at my old place that I would trim weekly and it would just explode with flowers and grow like crazy, yet the ones that I did not trim often didn't flower as often.
I think I might have pictures of it somewhere.

Yes, cutting plants down makes them grow more. Same with most human hair and a bunch of other things.
