I think some places just give you x amount per year, but where I work, you earn it based on hours work. For example, you get one hour of PTO per 40 hours worked. Something like that. Wal-Mart also has a new system called Protected PTO. With PPTO, you can put it for time off, no matter what, and get automatically approved. You can leave work early, and not get a point for it. You can save a point after calling in by putting in eight hours of PPTO. This of course accumulates much more slowly. Also, at our store, and many others, managers are trying to limit you using it, because they're butthurt that it exists. But out of all the managers I've ever worked with there, and their turnover is pretty high, there is only one that I have ever cared about, and she doesn't work there anymore, so they can get fucked.
Should also note I'm coming up on 5 years, and once that hits my PTO generates faster.
