Hey. Leave the poor guy and his bike alone. It's all he has.

Pretty sure my husband would disagree on the "all he has" part.

But, no, I did not pay $1k for the bike, though I gladly would. My dream bike is a $7k Pinarello. In this case I got the bike used and refurbished through a bike charity here in Chicago for $225. I get a "new" bike that is a serious upgrade from what I ride now, and they get some cash for their non-profit. Win-win.

As someone who doesn't bike... what makes a good bike... good?

Well that is a win win. I was looking up the bike and there was a site selling it for 1125 bucks.

It's a lot of things. The type of chain cassette you have, your chainring, the chain quality itself, the material the bike is made out of, how stiff it is, how well it absorbs vibration from the ground, the suppleness of your tire walls - that's particularly important - how you sit on the bike, the type of handlebars and how areodynamic your body position is as a result...it's so many things.

But I can say that the Phaeton will be a massive upgrade compared to my comfort bike, my Trek FX2, which retailed for $500 new when I got it. It's not a stiff bike, it's heavy, not aerodynamically designed, the cables are on the outside, wide handlebars (so it's hard to tuck in for speed during a headwind), cheap cassette (though I use a Shimano). it was a dependable bike, for sure, got me through my first solo century ride and I've put about 6,000 miles on it, so it worked. But I want to see how well I can really push myself, and I need a true road bike for that.

I am still flabbergasted that anyone let a prize like that go for so cheap. I'm just still in shock I managed to snag the bike.

Overall, bike prices have been dropping for the last decade. Quality is up and a lot of touring upgrades are filtering their way down to my level for the same price as even lower-end stuff. It's quite nice, puts quality bikes in the hands of even the amateur like me.

That does defeat the purpose of riding...

You could always get a bike with electronic assist. Then you're just pushing pedals with no real effort.

    That's true.

I have been thinking about getting a bike, but if I do then I have to get something to carry it on the trunk of my car.

That's easy enough. I have a trunk holder for my bikes. Was pretty cheap and can be taken off anytime.

Do you have junk in said trunk?
