    Shoujo Shuumatsu Ryokou

I have a bit of a history with this one. I remember when the anime got announced and I read the synopsis and thought that it sounded interesting enough, so I decided to start reading the manga. I don't know why but I went into this expecting something different than what it obviously was. At the time I probably thought it wasn't being ambitious enough with its premise. Whatever the case, I felt disappointed and stopped reading the manga at chapter 25.

It took a while for the anime to actually come out and by the time it started airing I told people that went into it with the same misguided expectations that it wasn't going anywhere. From what I had read I assumed that this was one of those manga that would just go on forever without going anywhere and without accomplishing anything. So the anime had its run.

Shortly after the anime ended, I think it was, it was announced that the manga would end soon and as it turned out I had already read more than half of the story. I thought to myself that I'd definitely read it at some point then if I don't have that many chapters left to complete it. Around that time Radio also spoiled me on the ending and that was what really made me want to read it. Manga spoiler: The girls reach the highest level of the city only to find out that it's completely empty and devoid of life just like the rest of the city. The kettenkrad broke shortly before this and with only little food left the girls are considering their options. It's an open ending but the sword of damocles is looming ominously over their heads. At least that was my impression.

I read the rest of the manga in one session but I felt that I wanted more out of this, so I did the most obvious thing and watched the anime that I previously skipped. I really took my time with watching this and I had to push myself to watch the three remaining episodes today because I wanted to finish this before I go on vacation. When I say I had to push myself it's not because I didn't enjoy it, quite the opposite. This has grown on me immensely.

Initially I felt like the show was downplaying its dire premise with its lightheartedness but ultimately it turned out that it only made it even more bittersweet of a watch. In my eyes, the adaptation was handled very well. The haunting ambient sounds, like voices of the faded world, resulted in a dense and fitting atmosphere. The soundtrack was reserved and served to underline the largely ambient soundscape at the right times.

While I was watching the anime, I actually felt that this show had become incredibly depressing for me. I already noticed this when I picked the manga back up. Somehow I was much more invested in the entire setting, so much so that I was almost a bit shocked when (manga spoiler) Chito injured her leg. It was only a minor injury, but hardly anything had happened to the girls so far, so this was unprecedented.

The last episode of the anime especially reminded me of how sad the girls' situation actually is and how lonely they are. I know that the point of the last episode was that they actually aren't lonely because they have themselves but I'm not optimistic enough to look past the fact that they are literally the last humans on earth..

At the end of the day I am glad that I picked this back up despite how depressing it was to read and watch.

    8/10

Parts like them imagining how they'd furnish the room or seeing the effect of a weapon of mass-destruction firsthand were the most memorable to me among the hard hitters.

There's also the (subtle) realisation that the two people they met on their trip are probably dead now.

Yeah, I wonder how that happened. Also the fact that Kanazawa used to have someone with him as well.

I didn't really think it through but I still feel like there are some inconsistencies where the world doesn't add up in terms of everyone being gone except Chito and Yuu but it's not severe enough for it to affect my enjoyment in any way.

Tbh I'm pretty sure that they just committed suicide.

Agree on Flying Witch, need more. I think Colors could go forever just showing more ways they get caught up in shenanigans.

Literally just finished Konohona Kitan, if you want more comfy. I heard rumors of a season 2, which kind of makes sense given the important unfinished plot point, but I can't find any confirmation.

Oh I've seen it and enjoyed it, it's just a matter of recollecting these things for inclusion.

I think I skipped that one simply due to the apparent loli-ish factor, but Colours has been a good example where a good show can come out of young characters regardless. Don't have time right now but I'll consider.

    Easy!

Amanchu Kinda strange character designs, but it's an easy going series about girls scuba diving

Hanasaku Iroha Easy going series about girls working at a small inn.

Tamayura_Hitotose Easy going series about a girl who likes taking photo's and her friends. The series is actually a sequel to a 4 part OVA, but I watched the whole series before I even realized this fact.

A-Channel Pretty much just another cute girls doing cute things series, but I especially like Tooru and the way she feels like she has to constantly be vigilante to protect her insanely clueless friend.

Aria The Animation And finally, the ultimate and granddaddy of all comfy series, Aria. Everything about this series from the characters, to the visuals, to the music is just perfect. Aria is always the series I compare all other comfy series to.
