The ending of S1 where nothing happened really rubbed me the wrong way. I was willing to look past the manufactured Dawson Creek drama because S2 ended better. And, to be honest, I felt like main guy would have never, ever done a fucking thing unless they introduced that blonde dude. Necessary evil to get the narrative to move. Lazy? Yes. But needed.

I was the same with Nisekoi, though. Really liked S1, and though S2 was hot garbage for the same reasons.

Granted I'm writing this after only seeing s1 but I didn't entirely mind the ending where there's no closure or definitive relationship beginning. I think that's what the second season is for. The friendship continues to develop into an intimate one but apparently it's done poorly. My opinion is skewed though because I haven't seen s2 yet.

Kimi ni Todoke spoilers I was okay with the ambiguous ending of s1. It was satisfying enough that they (allegedly) realized their feelings for each other. I did like the blonde guy in season 2 and honestly that whole plot point that took up most of the season would have been better condensed into 3 episodes max, if you stayed true to the story. Kazehaya's retardedness and Sawako's retardedness was indeed manufactured but was completely unnecessary. Say I Love You handled the same sort of theme much better, with Mai's insecurity over dating someone so popular and attractive feeling organic rather than "welp, need some conflict" like Kimi ni Todoke did. Season 1 would've been a 10/10 for me if the confession would've happened at the end, with season 2 being much better by dealing with their insecurities as a couple that doesn't know how to be a couple. Blonde dude's intrusion, Ume's (best girl) side arcs, rumor arcs, all could have been roadblocks for them figuring out how to make their relationship work instead of roadblocks to "well have no absolutely no reason to drift apart like this but what the hell we have a dozen episodes" and "did he/she say they like me or they LIKE me?" I fell so out of love with the characters (except Ume, she's great) that by the time they literally kiss and make up I honestly couldn't care less. It was more rewarding for me to mark it completed on my MAL than it was to actually finish the show.

I agree that, as it stands, the blonde dude was a necessary evil to move the plot, but the plot shouldn't have been where it was in the first place; on top of that, it was just dragged out way too long.

Also, problem with s2 of Nisekoi is it was almost 100% filler just kinda snatched and grabbed from various points in the manga while s1 had a defined narrative. Nisekoi works great as a manga, but they shouldn't have made a season 2 until the manga ended (or at least had enough material to make it feel like something other than random, disconnected filler that did nothing to enhance season 1).
