Well the drawings from a gay comic book artist who draws gay superheroes with oversized dongs flopping around, it is pretty much on par with most anime softcore hentei.

Looking like 13 would be an improvement for many of these shows -_-
Many times they dont look older than fucking 7 for fucks sake.
You avoid them of course but you still continue to ask yourself why they continue to exist.

Because just like with Game of Thrones, it adds zilch to the narrative, which is why I'm watching something.

It does make looking for new anime to watch a chore. And I've put up with it for the sake of a good story.

I did like Kill la Kill. I thought using fan service as a giant running gag was awesome.

I almost stopped watching Gurren Lagan because the one character put his finger in the one kids butt hole. Glad I kept watching. I've never laugh cried so much watching something.

I'm sick of how Anime is now always taking place in a high school. What happened to anime like Trigun, Tenchi, Rurouni Kenshin, Bebop? I don't mind Harem anime like Tenchi and Heaven's Lost Property, but the later show has a really interesting story line that is like 5 minutes of the show but the rest is fan service. Fan service is great but it doesn't have to engulf the show. The only time it's fine to do that is when a show had crap for a story.

Who ever created Heaven's Lost Property needed someone to jump in and limit the fan service. It had a good story, no need for so much fan service.

It's fine when it's subtle. It's just not very subtle anymore.

There's still plenty of shows without fan service or school settings every season, just like there were plenty shows with it back when shows like Bepop aired, it's just that unlike now where almost every show is easily accessable in the west and people look at charts showing all the shows of a season, back then it was only really the few good shows that would suit the western audience the best that came over to us. If you take a look at shows aired in 1998(when trigun and bepop came out) i doubt you will recognise many of them.

As far as heaven's lost property goes, i only watched about half of the first season before i sort of forgot about it and didn't end up finishing it so it could be that im completely wrong, but isn't it just a comedy/fan service show? From what i watched it barely had any story at least, although now that I'm looking at what people say about the manga it does have some story, so perhaps it is just a bad adaption. A show that I'm enjoying a lot, Prisma Illya, is somewhat similar in that it has a mix of fan service parts and serious parts(and being based on the fate universe, those parts are quite good) but they actually do a quite good job at alternating between them in my opinion, having a couple of episodes mostly about slice of life/fan service, and then later episodes being more serious.

The show does have a good story but it did copy the mange pretty well and the manga focuses a lot on fan service. If you watched the show you would see bits of the Synapse which is where the real story sits. The show only covers I'd say 1/3 of the manga, and near the end it reveals a lot about the Synapse and what happened. The show never got funding to go that far, probably because the fan service never allowed the show to be taken serious.

Basically the people in the Synapse are a technology wonder civilization that cured aging, can't die, and get everything they want. Place looks like heaven and sounds like it, right? Except there's a huge problem in that they're bored. Someone built a machine that can grant wishes which they show it as the main characters dream, and one wish made Earth.

That same person also made the Angeloids which are basically sex dolls that are specialized in certain areas. Ikaros was sent to kill humans who created Tower of Babel. Something went wrong and someone sent her back to the Synapse to destroy them. You'll see hints of this battle within the show. Essentially the people of the Synapse are like the Gods of Ancient Greece as they like to toy with the humans on Earth. The Synapse people looked at the people of Earth and saw something odd, that despite all that happened they find happiness. Jealous of this, the Synapsians made pods they would sleep in that would create avatars of them on Earth.

That is the story of Heaven's lost Property which is pretty good but unfortunately all near the end of the manga. The character development was unique cause the characters do grow a lot throughout the show. But because of all the fan service, especially within the two seasons, nobody would look past it. It got to the point where the fan service was so intentional that it got stupid and bad. The flying panties put a smile on my face but the episode where they would fish the largest breast women got dumb. You could tell they were trying too hard to fan service. Nymph was also borderline pedo in some scenes. Which shockingly was at one point one of the most popular female characters in Japan.

But the show does make you think about the future of humans. If we cured aging, got everything we wanted, and can't die then we'd be bored to tears. Instead of crawling into pods to create avatars we may wire our brains to computers to play online with friends to get XP and raid for purples. But knowing Japan they would reboot the show in the future with a different story arc, and hopefully use a lot less fan service. Cause the writers knew what they were doing but someone probably told them "fan service the crap out of it" cause you know money. I'm not saying some fan service is bad but that much can take away you and your anime/manga's credibility.

And that's terrible because today Japan is pumping this stuff out faster than people can watch it. And like any media that does this, it floods the market with crap which desensitizes people from it. I think Heaven's lost Property is a diamond in the ruff, but it's easy to see why some people overlook it. Too much fan service. It was easier to find good anime in the past cause someone took the time to find the gems and filter the crap out. Nowadays I get on YouTube and everyone recommends crap. Kill a Kill was the most overwhelming recommended to watch and it really wasn't that good. Funny as hell but personally I think Gokudo is a lot better in comedy and nobody has heard of it. OMG you killed my father, prepare to die! A very Japanese cliche except now done with a daughter and not son. Fan service is everywhere but even the creators used it for comedy relief. Where in Heaven's lost Property I think they did in fact want you to fap to the fan service.
