First build; looking to build a desktop €1000- €1200

    Hello community,

This is my first time posting after lurking this forum for a while now. Needless to say I am a very inexperienced "builder" and am in need of some help to make a build which is preferably as cheap as possible while having the best performance as possible (don't we all want this?).

    Budget
My savings allow me to go as high as 1200 euros, but I am only willing to go this high if the extra investment really is worth it.
Preferably I'd like to stick around ~800-1000 euros. Monitor is excluded from budget.

    Resolution
Not settled on this yet, depending on what graphics card is used and how much money I have left for the monitor. 1920x1080. Ideally some big ass monitor so I can enjoy my pixels.

    Games / Settings Desired
I am used playing my games at a meager 20 fps at normal or low settings, I'd like to be able to enjoy the games I play at a fps of 60+ while having high/ultra graphics turned on. The games am I aiming to do this for are: Elder Scrolls Online, Diablo III, Heroes of the Storm, Dark Souls II and in the future Fallout 4 and Dark Souls III.

Any other intensive software or special things you do (Frequent video encoding, 3D modeling, etc)
Not interested in any editing, streaming or overclocking or whatever. The only other use besides gaming is watching movies, listening music and the casual paper writing for college. I do not think this should burden the build anymore than the gaming does.

    Country
The Netherlands, noted should be that when using the part picker, the closest values resembling my countries are Germany, although not all hardware is available there at the moment. When no price is displayed I will check my closest retailer for a price and will show it to you manually.

    Parts that can be reused
No desktop to start from, although I have an extensive audio set (9.1) which I am going to reuse. The motherboard does not need to be compatible for this as I have an external sound card which runs through USB to enable this sound system.

    Do you need an OS?
    No

Do you need peripherals (e.g. monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc)?
I do not need a mouse nor speakers. I am in need of a monitor and a (cheap) keyboard.

My most foremost question would be whether the setup I have posted will be able to run my demands. Also I'd like some advice concerning sticking to the old gen Intel or going for new the new Skylake? If I have made some price/performance poor decisions please tell me as well :)

    Thank you in advance,

I missed the fact that you're in NL, so the NL resident posters will likely help you more. At the upper end of your budget, but I think that it's well worth it.

Thank you for your reply, I kind of missed that the R9 380 is in fact better(can I say this?) and cheaper than the GTX 960.
It is at the upper end, but with the monitor included so that is a big plus.

I am going to have a look at the local retail and the prices here for these components.

You should really suck it up and drop the extra Euros on a 970. I'd get the Asus GeForce GTX 970 4GB STRIX Video Card. You may even consider dropping back to the i5-4690k and a z97 board to save some cash there to get the better GPU. Also, you need to get a better PSU. Something like this: XFX XTR 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply or a Seasonic PSU (the guts of the XFX one listed).

Okay, here is a build I put together. This is back on the 1150 haswell chipset, and it's a locked processor since you said you are not interested in OCing in your OP.

Would you still advise the same cooler and monitor?

If you are not going to Overclock, the stock cooler is more than enough, but the 212 would be fine to use - but no real need.

The monitor seems a fine choice, but I haven't spent as much time learning about the various monitors as I have with the rest of computer parts so I tend to keep my mouth shut with monitor recommendations.

What do you think your plans are for this machine in the future? Is this a rig you'd like to keep updating here and there, or is this just something to use for the next few years and when you finish up with School (and presumably get that high paying job) you'll reward yourself with a new rig?

Ok, thank you for your input! I think I will be going for this monitor then as the retailer is offering a nice discount on it. Going to be stubborn and take the cooler anyway. 30 euros is a little investment for something I have grown to fear (old desktops and laptops overheating).

Ideally I'd keep upgrading this rig every once in a while yes. It seems like the most efficient way to keep up with the technology. Not planning on purchasing an entirely new rig. I've been using laptops for gaming for the last 4-5 years or so and the thing that has put me off most is the necessity to purchase a new one when a component starts to fail. Looking forwards to being able to pick a part that either fails or is struggling to keep up with new demands (in the future) to replace it rather than spending another load of money.
