    [Legion] Shadow Priest Discussion

A thread here to discuss anything related to shadow priests in Legion, this includes anything regarding blizzcon, the recent blogs, upcoming beta and any new info that comes out.
Below you can find all of the information released specifically related to shadow priests. If you find new info please post it here too!

    • Shadow Priests don't have Flash Heal or Heal anymore, but they do have Shadowmend, which is a new spell that is twice as good as Flash Heal in terms of how much it heals for, but over the next 10 seconds half of that heal fades away. If the target takes damage it comes off of the Shadowmend damage first, so if the target is constantly taking damage it is a really strong heal.
    • Shadow will also keep PW:S.

We continue our early look at class and specialization design with the Priest. In these blogs, we’ll be exploring class identity, discussing Legion’s new designs, and presenting core combat abilities for each specialization—laying out the foundation upon which talents and Artifacts will build further. With that in mind, let’s delve into what it means to be a Priest in World of Warcraft.

Priests have a strong identity as spiritual practitioners who harness divine power to inspire and protect allies, heal the injured, and cure the ailed. But while this clearly holds true for Holy Priests, these ideas are less fundamental to Discipline Priests—and the ideals and beliefs of Shadow Priests are antithetical to those of Holy Priests.

Despite these differences, Priests of any spec share one key thing in common: unwavering faith in something from which they draw great power. What delineates specializations is the source of that power. In Legion, we’re going to explore that dichotomy in greater depth than ever through the gameplay for each specialization.

    Shadow
The Light in which many priests bathe is brilliant and effervescent, granting them immense divine power. But the brightest light casts the darkest shadow—and from within this blackness, a rival power dwells. Shadow priests fully embrace this opposing polarity, their faith equally resolute as their holy counterparts—but focused on shadowy magics and mental manipulation. Like all priests, they dedicate much of their lives to worship—but they derive their power from the Void, straying dangerously close to the domain of the Old Gods. To truly understand such ancient, corruptive influence is to be driven mad. This is the state in which these dark priests thrive, embracing insanity and feeding off of the minds of their opponents to reach terrifying new limits.

"These dark priests thrive, embracing insanity and feeding off of the minds of their opponents to reach terrifying new limits"

    Gameplay
We’ve long alluded to the Old God influences of Shadow Priests in their spells and abilities, and we’re making that more distinct in Legion.
A new resource, Insanity, provides a better fit for Shadow, having more granularity and gameplay that emphasizes the immense but fleeting power that the Void offers. Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, and Vampiric Touch will build Insanity. Reaching maximum Insanity will transform Shadowform into Voidform, giving the Shadow Priest access to stronger Void magic, but it is unable to be maintained indefinitely. This should make for interesting gameplay as Shadow Priests try to maintain the height of their Insanity as long as possible to prey on the minds of their enemies.

While not under the effects of Insanity, Shadow Priests continue to rely heavily on abilities that inflict sustained damage over time. Finally, having turned away from the Light, Shadow Priests eschew such spells as Heal, Flash Heal, and Prayer of Mending. Power Word: Shield and Shadow Mend are their primary healing tools.

    • Voidform
    • Passive
    • When you reach 100 Insanity, you enter Voidform, transforming your Mind spells into Void spells, and increasing your Shadow damage by 30%.
    • While in Voidform, you gain 2% Haste every 1 sec. This Haste will also persist for 20 sec after Voidform ends.
    • Voidform causes your Insanity to constantly drain, faster and faster, until completely drained, and Voidform ends.
    • Mind Flay
    • 40 yd range, Channeled
    • Assault the target’s mind with Shadow energy, causing minor Shadow damage over 3 sec and slowing their movement speed by 50%.
    • While in Voidform, transforms into Void Flay, which also extends Shadow Word: Pain by 3 sec.
    • Mind Blast
    • 40 yd range, 1.5 sec cast, 9 sec cooldown
    • Blasts the target’s mind for strong Shadow damage.
    • Generates 15 Insanity.
    • While in Voidform, transforms into Void Blast, which has a 4.5 sec cooldown, and also extends Vampiric Touch by 3 sec.
    • Vampiric Touch
    • 40 yd range, 1.5 sec cast
    • A touch of darkness that causes huge Shadow damage over 24 sec, and heals the Priest for each point of damage dealt.
    • If Vampiric Touch is dispelled, the dispeller flees in Horror for 3 sec.
    • Each time Vampiric Touch deals damage, it generates 3 Insanity.
    • Shadow Word: Pain
    • 40 yd range, Instant
    • A word of darkness that causes minor Shadow damage instantly, and an additional huge amount of damage over 18 sec.
    • Each time Shadow Word: Pain deals damage, it generates 3 Insanity, and has a 10% chance to reset the cooldown of Mind Blast.
    • Mastery: Madness
    • Increases the damage and Insanity generation of your Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Pain, Vampiric Touch, and Shadow Word: Death by 20% (with Mastery from typical gear).

Additionally, to give you an idea of how some talents may build upon this, here’s an example of one of their Shadow-specific talents:
    • Oblivion
    • Instant, 2 min cooldown
    • Let the power of the void flow through you, instantly generating 100 Insanity.

Here we have further updates from twitter-

The current plan is to remove Weakened Soul.(WarcraftDevs)

Voidform doesn't stop your abilities from generating Insanity. Mastery will allow you to maintain Voidform longer/stronger.(WarcraftDevs)

Was just curious about how fast the drain is-it will always be greater, at least to some degree, than our ability to generate?
At first, the Voidform drain is slower than you can generate Insanity, but it ramps up over time, draining faster and faster.(WarcraftDevs)

In Legion, will Shadow Mend overhealing still trigger the DoT? Basically, is it possible for it to be a net loss?
Nope! Only the effective healing will turn into a DoT.(WarcraftDevs)

Insanity shares some of the pre-WoD eclipse problem. Idea: Remove damage buff, make it about max. DoT extension/Haste Buff.
You'll be able to return to Voidform very quickly, thanks to the Haste from your previous Voidform persisting for 20 seconds.(WarcraftDevs)

I WILL HEAL YOU TO DEATH! GLORY TO CTHULU, FTHAGN RY'LEH!
Sounds like you may enjoy the fact that you're forced to speak Shath'yar - the language of the Old Gods - while in Voidform.(WarcraftDevs)

unclear in the blog: is insanity capped at 100, is void form toggleable?
Yes, Insanity is capped at 100. Voidform is automatically activated, not toggled.(WarcraftDevs)

Mind Spike is a talent (and no longer clears DoTs). Devouring Plague is gone for now - doesn't fit well with the theme. (WarcraftDevs)
Yes, Mind Sear has a Void version, but we're still working out the details. (WarcraftDevs)
DoTs update dynamically with Haste from Voidform. No snapshotting.(WarcraftDevs)

When Voidform ends, you get a buff that provides the Haste from that Voidform for 20 sec. It stacks with the next Voidform.(WarcraftDevs)

Do Void- and Mind Blast share CD? Or can i enter Voidform with MB, and then cast VB immediately?
We're still iterating on the Shadow rotation, and looking to further differentiate gameplay in/out of Voidform. Stay tuned. (WarcraftDevs)

is shadow word: death gone for spreists? it was so important for pvp tbh, will be really sad if it is gone.
Currently, it remains, as the only true execute ability (other than Execute).(WarcraftDevs)

With the Shadow Priest changes in Legion, will the way Clarity of Power be changing?
The new rotation is significantly different, so most talents have to be rethought. (WarcraftDevs)

The blade has a will of its own: it uses powerful Void energies and mind magics to warp everything around it for some nefarious purpose.

Shadow in Legion currently has a ridiculous amount of utility, way more than any other spec. I talked about that in the previous thread, here:

    Re: Utility
Shadow is in a very odd situation when it comes to utility, especially in PvP. The amount of potential utility they offer is astronomical. It’s a staggeringly long list: Body and Soul, Dispel Magic, Dominate Mind, Mass Dispel, Mind Bomb, Power Word: Shield, Psychic Horror, Psychic Scream, Purify Disease, Shackle Undead, Shadow Mend, Silence, Vampiric Embrace… probably something else I’ve forgotten offhand. But at the same time, despite the crazy number of utility spells at their fingertips, it’s actually quite hard for them to actually use many of them. Since their rotation is based on continuously generating Insanity as fast as possible, any time lost to utility is punishing, especially in Voidform, where you’re actually losing Insanity while casting other things. And then on top of that, many of the spells cost huge chunks of Insanity as well. We’re not happy with that situation, and are considering other potential options. They could probably stand to lose at least a couple spells off that list, but we’re also considering bringing back Mana as an additional resource that would just be used for limiting your usage of the many utility spells, with costs proportional to their impact.

The above list also forgot to include[*] the 3rd and 6th rows of PvP talents. As an update on this, we've decided to buff Mind Control baseline (effectively re-adding it to PvP on top of Mind Bomb / Psychic Voice), and remove Psychic Horror instead. That still leaves them with way more utility than anyone else, of course.

Then we have the problem of whether they can actually use all that utility. Currently, you mostly can't, because of the Insanity costs, and how much that negatively impacts your offenses. We've decided to give Shadow (and Elemental and Enhancement) back the small mana bar like Balance currently has. Similar to other mana-using hybrid DPS, mana will be used for utility abilities, which should free you up to be able to use them much more than you can in the current build. (EDIT: To clarify, the switch to mana will hopefully make the NEXT build, not today's build.)

Keep the feedback on this coming, thanks!

    * EDIT: I had originally said 'Fade w/ Artifact' here as well. There was, at one point in development, an artifact trait that added damage reduction to Fade, similar to the old glyph, but it has since been changed. Sorry for the mistake. (Blue Tracker / Official Forums)
Many thanks for the contributions and discussions so far from other threads, the number of Legion threads being created was getting out of hand however so these spec specific threads have been created to allow continued discussions without cluttering the forums.

    About our dagger :
Q: The shadowpriest weapon looks .. underwhelming. Will there be an offhand or anything?
A: Yeah, it has an off-hand. It's also very present in gameplay through some of its abilities. (craig_amai)
A: The feedback on first impressions is very appreciated though. Daggers have a way of feeling underwhelming very easily. (craig_amai)

(sorry don't know how to do your fancy blue thingy)

Looking at the tweets... the haste buff stacks and apparently we'll be able to go back to voidform fast... maybe that's their idea of insanity : we'll get so much haste that in the end we'll basically have no cast time and be like : LOOK AT ME IM A TENTACLE MONSTER while running around everyone.

Why did we need a new one of these? This one already works great.

Every other topic appears to be closed with the focus being on these 3 new ones, 1 for each spec. I missed some of those twitter responses since I don't use twitter. Looking forward to beta so we can see and know more about all 3 specs.

I found that last bit funny. Although it does seem like that could very well happen. Haste is perpetually increasing while in void form and persists for 20 seconds after we exit. It's possible we could enter void form while the haste buff is still up and then keep increasing the percentage of haste stacked on us going in and out of void form faster than the last time until we are at the point where we might as well be casting while moving and flailing our tentacles through the raid group.

Hoping Xal'atath has some cool animations and effects. Currently I'm super jealous of the disc staff.

Admittedly shadow priests have never really had a clear cut identity, so I can appreciate that Blizzard is trying to carve out a niche for them in RP terms. However, void / insanity / old gods is never how I envisioned my character. When I really think about it, I don't even know exactly *how* I ever envisioned my character, other than there's vampiric stuff and she casts plagues and black magic and she is translucent and it's cool. I think part of me wishes WoW builds were more like Diablo, where I could mash a bunch of talents together and call my shadow priest a plague witch. I'm really looking forward to seeing if I like it, because as of right now I just don't know if I do or not.

PS. Bring back blue Palpatine beams of Mind Flay death. The original shadow priest imo:
Furthermore, I consider that China must be destroyed.

Looking by the wording, you get a buff after you leave void form (I assume a fixed haste buff with a different spell id), that can stack with the void form haste buff itself (which stacks). It is also unlikely the buff can stack to perpetuity as it will be favoured towards long encounters. Finally, if Vyr's set Archon with Swami is in any way an influence to void form, then we know that it has separate stacks for each instance of Archon.

Hopefully it doesn't share the same problem of momentum. Your initial void form buff (haste/mastery) perpetuates to all consecutive void forms, however considering that they expect void form buffs to be chained together, there will be a theoretical equilibrium which has a downward bias on good initial states and an upward bias on bad initial states based on your natural level of haste/mastery.

  8. #8
Not sure if this was discussed previously, but I'm getting a feeling that Shadowform will be passive in WoD.

So the wording isn't completely clear, but it sounds like shadow will no longer even have access to almost any ability that would kick you out of Shadowform (Resurrection would be the only one). Considering how rarely anyone casts a single rez anymore, Shadowform will be Inner Fire 2.0. Cast it when you get (battle-)rezzed and forget about it. It'd make sense for Blizzard to just do away with the ability and just give it the Inner Fire treatment: make it passive and adjust our abilities accordingly.

  9. #9
After rereading the description for voidform, the buff you get is the amount of haste you acquired while in Voidform. So say you kept it up for 25 seconds, you would have a 50% haste buff at the end of it (as haste increases by 2% for each second in void form) that would last for 20 more seconds. If in that time you were able to generate enough insanity, at 100 you would switch and then presumably have a different buff that didn't tick away (as it persists as long as voidform is up, provided you have a continuous source of insanity) and would give you the 20 second haste buff once it disappears. So you could have a period where your haste is incredibly high, but it would disappear once the 20 second buff faded, if it were possible to generate that much insanity in a short amount of time (which it definitely should be on fights with multiple targets). It'll be fun to see just how far it can be pushed once beta hits.

It'd make sense for Blizzard to just do away with the ability and just give it the Inner Fire treatment: make it passive and adjust our abilities accordingly.
..Are there shadow priests that don't already automatically cast shadowform and then forget about it until it has to be cast again? If it were passive we would have no choice but to be in shadowform 100% of the time, even out of combat.

I think it'll be passive. Maybe at 0 insanity we'll barely notice anything and the more we are close to 100 the more it becomes clear.

The most important thing right now are the talents and the artifact weapon tree. The class preview doesn't give us anything special or important than the new Voidform. Talents turn out to be how Shadow will be played.

Any information when talents & artifact weapon trees will be released?

What I am curious to see is what are they gonna give in terms of Defensive Capabilities for the Shadowpriest for PVP. The Void Form I suppose will be our big burst. The question is what will we be given to be able to cast anything in that Void Form because we have a problem at the moment with being trained.

In all honesty Psychic Scream breaks easily, The Psychic Tentacles don't last long due to low hit points and can be damaged both from the priest and the one at root, Horror needs Shadow Orbs which are used for the Devouring Plague , Vampiric Touch (3 second Horror to the dispeller)is nothing if you compare it to Unstable Affliction(A lot of damage+4 second silence) and Silence is useless against melee. Phantasm can remove slow effects but doesn't give you any Extra speed to run away and the other talents while giving you Extra speed do not remove slow effects and basically every melee class can reach you in an instant if they want. Dispersion remains the only ability in the game that forbids you to cast anything while trying to defend. Finally our Offhealing which used to be perfect is non existent.

I want to see a complete overhaul of our pvp defences.

I'm guessing you solely raid, so you obviously wouldn't care (or you're joking, I suck at being able to tell, Poe's law!), but leaving Shadowform has a clear purpose right now: to give you access to your healing spells. Without our traditional healing spells come Legion, it only makes sense to be in Shadowform 100% of the time. I mean, take a look at this quote from our class preview:

"The Light in which many priests bathe is brilliant and effervescent, granting them immense divine power. But the brightest light casts the darkest shadow—and from within this blackness, a rival power dwells. Shadow priests fully embrace this opposing polarity, their faith equally resolute as their holy counterparts—but focused on shadowy magics and mental manipulation"

If we shadow priests fully embrace this darkness, why would we even need a form that does not bask in the darkness?

I guess Blizzard could add a minor glyph that lets you shift out of Shadowform in case you ever get tired of looking at darkness. Probably make it only usable OoC similar to a Worgen's human form.

That would be cool too. If that is the case though, there's probably a 95% chance I'll make WeakAuras that /say or /yell bad jokes as I hit certain amounts of Insanity. Probably in reference of DBZ.

Maybe Shadowform is dependant on Insanity? The more Insanity you get the more you get darker and darker. You start as the normal looking "Holy" priest and you become darker and darker the more Insanity you accumulate until you unleash it by shifting into Voidform - that's the moment when we are "the darkest" and get those tentacles. And as Insanity is decreasing we get less tentacles and return to our normal form.

First: Devouring Plague is gone, check the OP. I'm pretty certain shadow orbs are gone as well, but I don't have any proof of that. There's no mention of shadow orbs in our class preview, so I'd imagine that means they're gone.

Second: I personally think it's okay that we're weak to melee. We're not frost mages or hunters. There's nothing about being a shadow priest that makes me think we should have some sort of advantage over melee classes.
Besides, it's not that we don't have good defensive tools. We have a 2 min cd dispersion, high uptime on 60% movement speed, PWS, and (for some stupid reason) spectral guise. We're also one of the only two DPS specs that can defensively dispel magic effects. The problem is that for every tool we have, melee classes have a tool to counter it, in addition to more tools on top of that. The problem isn't shadow, the problem is the state of the game, really.

Lastly: Ice Block and Deterrence both stop the caster's ability to cast while being on the defensive. Hyperbole is rarely ever helpful.

Aren't they adding independent PVP talents to address this?

They should add some effect to the artifact. Like prince of persia two thrones. Tentacles emanate from the dagger wrapping one of your hand with an eerie glow

Reasons! i.e. Redsparowe wasn't OP. However, I won't write all over again what has already been written into the other thread. Red, this is rubbish.

Can't you just merge them, because there has been a good discussion going on. This is what creates redundancy. You don't want multiple Threads and open them yourself. Dude...

I think shadow should definitely have permanent Shadow Form. So far in Legion our heal is shadowcentric. Since we are a priest we may be able to resurrect but Prayer of Mending, Flash Heal and Resurrection are the only moves that take us out of Shadowform. 3 moves.
