    [Legion] Holy Priest Discussion

A thread here to discuss anything related to Holy Priests in Legion, this includes anything regarding Blizzcon, the recent blogs, upcoming beta and any new info that comes out.
Below you can find all of the information released specifically related to Holy Priests. If you find new info please post it here too!

    • Holy Word: Serenity is now the biggest single target heal in the game, it has a substantial cooldown but will heal roughly half of the health bar of the target. A crit would be a full heal.
    • Holy also will have Prayer of Healing and Discipline will not.

Despite these differences, Priests of any spec share one key thing in common: unwavering faith in something from which they draw great power. What delineates specializations is the source of that power. In Legion, we’re going to explore that dichotomy in greater depth than ever through the gameplay for each specialization.

    Holy
After spending much of their lives in temples studying ancient doctrine, preaching the tenets of their faith, and pledging their full devotion to the divine powers they follow, the most adept priests leave their houses of worship to serve on the battlefield, as shepherd to flock. There, they use their holy powers to bless allies and mend wounds. And while most stay behind the frontlines to aid their comrades, these holy champions are also capable of smiting foes and carrying out sacred justice. They’re also morally opposed to the use of Shadow and Void magic—rather, they are exemplars of the incredible grace and power of the divine and the Light, and even death cannot fully stop their healing capabilities.

"The most adept priests leave their houses of worship to serve on the battlefield, as shepherd to flock"

    Gameplay
Given the innate purity of the spec, we want to ensure that Holy Priests continue to have a large repertoire of compelling healing spells. The Chakra system was cumbersome, requiring additional setup to optimally use most spells and restricting how much you could fluidly shift between healing methods. We have removed it in favor of a more dynamic play style focused around Holy Words. New Holy Word spells are designed to feel absolutely miraculous, having huge effects balanced with long base cooldowns. The new passive effect of Serendipity allows those long base cooldowns to be reduced, letting you use them more frequently. Finally, in keeping with the resolute beliefs of the Holy Priest, they can make no use of Shadow spells. Smite, Holy Fire, and Holy Word: Chastise are the instruments used by Holy Priests to inflict damage upon their enemies.

Here’s a basic look at the core combat healing abilities for Holy Priests:

    • Heal
    • 2.0% Mana, 40 yd range, 2.5 sec cast
    • A slow but efficient spell that heals an ally for a moderate amount.
    • Flash Heal
    • 3.5% Mana, 40 yd range, 1.5 sec cast
    • A fast but expensive spell that heals an ally for a moderate amount.
    • Holy Word: Serenity
    • 4.0% Mana, 40 yd range, Instant, 1 min cooldown
    • Perform a miracle, healing an ally for an absolutely massive amount.
    • Prayer of Healing
    • 8.0% Mana, 40 yd range, 2.5 sec cast
    • A powerful prayer that heals up to 5 injured allies within 15 yards of the target for a strong amount.
    • Prayer of Mending
    1. 2.0% Mana, 40 yd range, 1.5 sec cast, 10 sec cooldown
    2. Places a spell on a party or raid member that heals them for a moderate amount the next time they take damage. When the heal occurs, Prayer of Mending jumps to another party or raid member within 20 yds. Jumps up to 5 times and lasts 30 sec. after each jump.
    • Holy Word: Sanctify
    • 5% Mana, 40 yd range, Instant, 1 min. cooldown
    • Release miraculous light into a target location, healing up to 6 allies within 10 yards for a huge amount.
    • Renew
    • 2.5% Mana, 40 yd range, Instant
    • Fill the target with faith in the Light, healing them instantly for a minor amount and then a large amount over 15 sec.
    • Serendipity
    • Passive
    • When you cast Flash Heal or Heal, the cooldown of Holy Word: Serenity is reduced by 6 sec.
    • When you cast Prayer of Healing or Prayer of Mending, the cooldown of Holy Word: Sanctify is reduced by 6 sec.
    • When you cast Smite or Holy Fire, the cooldown of Holy Word: Chastise is reduced by 6 sec.
    • Mastery: Echo of Light
    • Your direct healing spells heal for an additional 25% (with Mastery from typical gear) over 6 sec.

Additionally, to give you an idea of how some talents may build upon this, here’s an example of one of their Holy-specific talents:
    • Apotheosis
    • Instant, 3 min cooldown
    • Enter a pure Holy form for 30 sec, increasing the effects of Serendipity by 200%.

Here we have further updates from twitter-

Holy Nova is, in fact, the current plan! All healers will have some capacity to damage multiple targets.(WarcraftDevs)

A crit Holy Word: Serenity is basically a full heal. We think that qualifies as "absolutely massive."(WarcraftDevs)

Just reading priest blog and unless im mistaken PoH group restriction appears gone. Is that so ( *crosses fingers* )
Indeed! We're trying a different targeting method for Prayer of Healing, which makes it more localized instead of group-based.(WarcraftDevs)

Love the Holy Priest redesign. Hope for fun smiting talents to go with it. Does Holy Word: Sanctify replace Circle of Healing?
We're currently considering talent options that bring back Circle of Healing, or something similar.(WarcraftDevs)

No mention of Holy Nova. Is it gone?
The current plan is for Holy Nova to be Holy's method of dealing AoE damage. (WarcraftDevs)

Will Holy Word: Serenity still apply a crit buff, as it does currently?
No. The spell is now entirely focused into being a very large instant heal. (WarcraftDevs)

To be honest I love the Holy changes. Never liked Holy that much but... Artifact & new direction look great. I love the "Holy Word" thing and the mechanic. Hopefully there will be another Holy Word in the talents.

  3. #3
That's a bit doubtful to be another holy word from talents. Holy just from this preview has a very good flow if divine insight and words of mending still exist. If there were a few things that i would change from what was presented it would be sanctify hitting all targets in the area with normal dr instead of 6 given it is a 1 min cd and some synergy for renew which seems to have none currently. There is also this wild rumour that i keep hearing about that spirit is completely removed and the only mana regen is the baseline one but can't quite confirm that yet which will bring a substantial change in healing gameplay in general.

  4. #4
What will be the role of renew, clearly it has no synergy with serendipity and no synergy with echo of light, no mention of chakra: serenity buffs being baked in. From my experience, heal and renew have always been substitutes (where renew was the correct option 90% of the time).

Prayer of healing party restriction change is great, but i feel they could have made it heal 3 targets in 30y range (instead of 5 in 15) similar to healing ribbon to differentiate it more from holy radiance and chain heal and reinforce different strengths of specs (stacked vs spread).

Lastly, glancing at the mana/time cost ratio of heal to flash heal, haste seems to be the dominant stat for holy again. Not even considering the other benefits of haste, the other stats looks to be uncompetitive even from a mana efficiency perspective.

Secretly I'm hoping triage healing will be a thing again (early cata kind), WoD is an improvement over MoP but not enough. With shields being diminished, there is hope.

That naaru on a stick better have raid wide guardian spirit.

Just got back into playing my priest & I must say that I'm personally loving the current gameplay style. Not going to moan about changes to a class I'm pretty-much noob at though.

It looks nice & simple with talents (not yet specified) to spice things up. Looking forward to playing it!

I really like the look of the holy word abilities!
1 min CDs with powerful effects and a focus on reducing those abilities.
This is a unique playstyle and im really looking forward to it, and i have never enjoyed holy before

  7. #7
Can't say i agree exactly with haste being the premier stat, pretty sure it will be mastery once again. Serenity and Sanctify with echo of light will be pretty insane provided healing won't turn into 0-100 in 1-2 globals past the 1st tier.

  8. #8
agreed on the matter of renew having no synergy with the rest of the spec's play style. but talents could very well address this, and create a renew focused play style as an option perhaps? or at least one that incorporates it

We once had a Shadow Word as a talent in Mists of Pandaria (I cried when they removed it) so we don't know yet.

A Holy Word that would support a Renew playstyle would be nice. Some kind of like:

    Holy Word: Salvation
4.0% Mana, 40 yd range, Instant, 1 min cooldown

    1) Brings your current Renews to burst to heal the targetted players for the remaining duration.
    2) Spread the Renew of the targetted player to every other player within 10m of range (maybe 50% effectiveness)
    3) Heal the target for amount X. If the target has a Renew cast by yourself add another Renew to the target (working like Druids Germination)

I could come up with dozens of ideas for a Holy Word revolving around Renew lol.

My only real concern at this point is how Holy Word: Sanctify will play in practice. Having a put-on-ground spell with an *instant* effect (IE. not a HoT area) sounds highly cumbersome and hard to use efficiently.

Love the Naaru theme of the artifact weapon. Will go well with my title, Champion of the Naaru, which I have used almost exclusively since BC. To me the Naaru theme for Holy Priests came out of left field, yet it does seem to make perfect sense.

I've seen this rumour in a few places too, but never with any source or qualification; it's always just mentioned and that's that. Certainly, if it is being removed, it would be an interesting change.

Regarding the previewed abilities, I'm hopeful that the spells and talents that are yet to be revealed will promote greater mechanical interactions for Holy; what we've seen so far is decent, but if dropping those giant heals as often as possible is the ultimate aim of the spec, I'll feel a bit underwhelmed.
Oh yeah, look at it go! Roll out the barrel; feel it in your bones!

Removing spirit would be the best thing they could do. It's the same issues Blizzard had with hit rating which they finally removed in Warlords.

And without Spirit, every caster would need the same type of armor. There wouldn't be a difference between DPS and healer anymore in equipment.

I like the idea of removing spirit overall, it still leaves options open for trinkets were you could see effects such as demonic phylactery or everburning candle as ways to add resources on gear. I actually think this would fit well with holy specifically. In my mind holy, more than any other healers, has always been about spell selection. Choosing the right spell at the right time to fit the incoming damage. Rather than just spamming PWS, or chainheal, or uplift etc. We did see a bit of renew spamming in WoD but it felt weird :P I don't mind a bit of downtime in healing to then land that big efficient heal over 5 people, rather than flash healing each one as they take damage.
With a new emphasis on giving all healers the ability to do significant damage in downtime I think this would be a great time to implement that playstyle.

Will miss CoH if they do indeed remove it and I really dislike the requirements for Sanctify and new PoH. It will hurt smaller groups and make holy weaker than it currently is for managing spread players and 5m dungeons during aoe. I'm not entirely convinced of these changes and worry it might cause more harm than good overall.

It looks like they plan on it being a talent. Fingers crossed it sticks around.

I'm definitely excited to see how this plays out. I haven't played seriously since early Cata with a short spurt at the beginning of WoD. I think the Chakra system became more of a problem over the past expansions. When it was first introduced it was something that you chose and rarely needed to switch in a fight. With the previous expansions it was a lot more "stance dancing." Happy to see it gone but still keep the interesting healing spells that were brought with it. Might even have to resub and get back into the game with these major changes across the board.

I am a bit worried that the beginning of the expac, or at least anyone testing, will have a rough time with the changes. I hope they don't drift to far from this philosophy.

Holy shit the priest artifact for holy/shadow looks bad ass. Love it. This is sounding really good coming from a warrior.

When I think about it, I'd actually really like it if they removed spirit. Maybe then they can actually deliver on the promise they make every expac that they are going to 'make mana matter again', which always meant you had to watch your mana for a few weeks until you got raid gear, after which it was just the same spamming all over again.

i wouldn't hold my breath on that, considering that the playstyle of the disc can only be suported by perpetualy casting something, i don't feel like mana will be really relevant. And if holy priests were to be the only ones to have to manage mana that wouldn't be a good news.

My fear so far is that they tune our strenght around the Holy words, which means that then you would be compeled to use them as much as possible, which in its turn means that you would need to always cast a spell in order to reduce their cd. And then you would have to choose if you want to be a aoe healer or a single target one because you can't reduce both cd at the same time. So we would be back with the same restriction that we had with shakra.

Also, the 15 meters for PoH concerns me. How then are we supposed to heal spread raids? It was one of the few things we could do well, and paladin, disc priests, shaman and MW already are really good at healing stacked fights...

It concerns me as well, as that has always been our strength. If the paradigm shifts so its not, as long as we become strong at something else it shouldn't matter.

I am hopeful CoH stays, this makes me hopeful:
