I think people forget that Playboy started out as a Men's Interest magazine, much like Maxim and GQ today, and the girls were more of a sideshow to heavier politcal/social articles.

They only got more focused on the woman as other magazines came out, each one trying to be more explicit than the next.

That and their 'sex tips' try to make the most vanilla stuff seem raunchy. "If you want to spice up your sex life, try licking her/his nipples".

Playboy was overtaken by much more hardcore magazines well before I was a teenager.

I remember a time when a celebrity going nude in playboy was a huge deal. Now most celebs you want to see naked just basically post that shit on their instagram page on the daily. Last big nude celeb issue I remember was like Lindsay Lohan and it sucked. Now Miley Cyrus blows trannys on stage every night and Jennifer Lawrence's asshole is just a google search away.
