I think the confusion is the wordyology. Yes I made up that word.
Fries come from French fries, come from Frenched fried potatoes (or other vegetables). Frenched is a cutting technique also known as Julienned, which can also be said to cut vegetables into chips. So, both fries and chips are accurate for a Julienned and fried potato.
Chips, as in the things in the bags pictured above, are claimed by both the US and the UK were originally called chips in the UK. We can dispute the origin but not the original descriptions.
Edit: Aside, Frenched means a completely different thing for meat.
Salt and Vinegar for life! I love Herr's chips, S&V are the best followed by their Salt & Pepper chips. Also their Buffalo ripple chips are amazing. This thread made me hungry dammit!
Now I want to buy this

Miss Vickie's Jalapeno. I love these to death. Their original (regular) and sea salt & malt vinegar flavours are pretty good too. My favorite used to be Lays sea salt and black pepper but sadly they seem to have gone out of circulation here in Ontario. Can't find them anywhere. Ruffles spicy ketchup was pretty good too but was only a limited run.
Miss Vickie's Salt and Vinegar Chips from before 2000 when the recipe was different and the company was independently owned.
so many disgusting salt and vinegar's in here. you people disgust me.
