Not too sweet. Something, with Sophistication and "style" haha. I wish I had my uncles and aunties wine knowledge, but asking them is pretty hard since they live in my motherland :X (cba phoning them)

You normally decide on the dish first before you order the wine, otherwise find out what your date prefers (if you have one). Different wines are better suited for different meals. Red wine goes with red meat, lighter reds are better for chicken, pork, and other white meat. Non-sweet whites and light red for seafood.

Rule of thumb for Italian food is a light red is the safest bet because it goes with mostly everything. Choose something not too bold, not too fruity.

To add, your waiter, if trained well, should be able to offer you pairings with what you order. If the goal is to show off, do it some way else. Better to have no knowledge and ask for suggestions than pick something that could ruin the meal.

If he does nothing but suggest expensive stuff, he's a tosser.

On a subjective level, I'm a fan of anything from South America.

Red wine is always better because it evens with all meals.

I tend to go for red. And nothing beats a Rioja at that.

It depends what you're going to be eating, but the house wines will generally go well with everything.

I like red wine but I'm completely unaware of brands and years. I usually focus on the price in a restaurant))
