I never played Vanilla? What kind of proof would you like exactly?

Of course you wouldn't see those massive amounts of people all crammed in one spot on WoW, they have tons of servers on WoW. You want everyone jammed together on one realm so they can prove a point or something? Please don't make assumptions about what a player may or may not have done in the game. It is just trying to derail things.

Okay. That works too. She'll never be what she was initially, so you either stay with her if you love her, or find someone else.
But you can't have her from 11 years ago.

Come on now at least show a little compassion. What would he gain lying about it? I know we're on opposite sides of a contentious discussion but there ARE people behind these avatars.

Completely untrue, as Blizzard has the resources to hire people to manage legacy servers should they need to - but I expect they wouldn't.

The content is all 100% complete already - they don't need designers or devs, they just need a small management team and some CMs. They're already actively supporting Diablo 2, which has pretty much no one playing it anymore. Saying a redistribution of manpower would negatively affect live could potentially be true if it needed to happen at all, but it doesn't (and really it wouldn't anyway because no design team is necessary whatsoever since the content already exists).

Legacy servers existing requires nothing more than management, it wouldn't affect new content for the current live WoW in any way.

They certainly wouldn't reduce the number of overall subs Blizzard has.

I don't think using that kind of metric is very valid. I saw LOTS of people in the original FF14 server closing events and I would NOT argue that that game was any where near acceptable in quality. A lot of people gathering at one place for a final hurrah is not a good argument at all. How can you even think of using that ?

Why would people in live wow ever all gather at one place to make a video right now ? There is no reason to, they are all out and about doing the stuff they want to do. Running dungeons, leveling alts, sitting in their garison "farming" gold for legion, raiding, whatever they do with their time.

Also, that private server was free so when the announcement came I can garantee you that a lot of new people just joined up to join in the "celebrations".

Your argument is bad and you should feel bad.

With that said, I am sad that people who preferred the (imo way inferior) vanilla experience can't anymore. Blizz might want to rent out the IP to these guys so they can keep control of the IP but still let the players play it if they want. With the added bonus of not having to lift a freaking finger!

Though im not sure HR will approve much more of you being on a videogame forum during work hours more than looking at porn.

No... That is not at all how it is. Your girlfriend is a breathing living human being with feelings and will evolve in time. World of warcraft is not any of these things. It is a piece of software and can be backed up and be restored to any point in time a backup exists of it.

    Your analogy is incredibly stupid.

People complain that catering to the 1% of players for (mythic) raids is atrocious.

981 page thread about wanting Blizzard to cater to less 1% of the player base is downright giggle worthy.

I'm willing to pay 1 month for the opportunity.

Let's see how many sign that petition.

You be mature about this though, there's mmos that remain profitable at a fraction of 200k players, and we're talking about an "end of life" product here, not like they're going to develop content for it.
They will open 2-3 realms and do some minimal work to put it on the launcher (like the do for games even older than WoW)
I'd say that 100k opt-ins from actual paying battle.net accounts are plenty to start it up.
You still need to *prove* that 100k-200k+ people will play on legacy servers for an extended period of time and pay for it.

There are ways to do that. Otherwise Blizzard aren't going to change their minds. I'm just playing devil's advocate here.

Why isn't it? The developers and the owner of the IP want it to grow and change as years go by, not to be static and unchanging.
There are a bunch of static, unchanging games that you can spend your time on.

Actually the 150k active players (In a 10 day period as opposed to the standard 30 days) is what.. 3.3%? more than 3 times your estimate

What they decide to do with their software is their business. I don't give a shit either way. I think vanilla is a terrible game and I would never play it again even if it was the only video game in the world.

Comparing software to a human is not a good analogy at all. The human CANNOT stop evolving and being affected by time. Software by its very nature is immune to time and evolution if you are using version control. The whole point of it is to be able to go back at any point in time and find it exactly as you left it. And that is not even touching on the borderline sociopathic thinking that lets to compare things and humans ...

What I love about this entire thread is most people want to talk down about legacy servers. Let just look at the numbers guys, Vanilla through the very start of Cata the game was in an upward swing. In short order the game took a noise dive in subscribers. Fittingly the player base of Nostalrius wanted to relive vanilla and it wasn't just vanilla the Nostalrius team was making but also a TBC realm.

Ironically I spent 6 months on vanilla, it was ironic because I left wow in 2013'ish and never touched a private server before and when I was told (when an active wow member) about private servers I would laugh at them. I really hope the people against legacy servers can experiance what people did in Nos. A server that had 150k active members, within a 10 day window with estimates (unofficial) that it was over 250k over 30 days (industry standard.) The server had only been spread through word of mouth, it had only volunteers, it had a community that is trying to make that epic experiance available for all. Let us push, and perhaps fail, in convincing blizzard to get legacy servers. If we win you get to play on a legacy server inbetween the one year of waiting for content, and in the likelyhood we fail you will never notice us being gone, just like the 7 million people that once played next to you.

Not sure about anyone else but I have been playing wow since day 10. Did not really see the appeal and was bullied into it by friends almost 2 weeks after release. I played vanilla and went through all of it's patches from the initial honor system to the battleground being added and all that.

I have played it way more than I should have. I have also played all other expansions after and I can say with all honesty that compared to what it is today, vanilla was a terrible game that I would never touch with a 10 foot pole if it came out today.

With that said, blizzard can do whatever they want with their product. Closing private servers is their right and I support it. If they think they can make money off of vanilla nostalgia they will do so, if they think they can't they will not. It is entirely up to them how they use and sell their product. I am very confident that it will never affect my enjoyment of their current and future expansions.

Stop assuming people's agendas it makes you look like a stupid teenager.

They will tell you that from the data they assume, that it is much more than 1% or whatever. The reality is that it does not matter at all. Even if 100% of current players wanted vanilla it would not matter. It is not the player's choice. It is blizzard's choice. If they think they can make money off of these people they will do everything they can to make that money. If they have come to the conclusion that they cannot make money from them they will keep ignoring them. Its as simple as that.
