Well the rebels in Jemen fired at the us vessels at sea and they fired back. The us had not used any force against the rebels in Jemes prior. When someone uses their missles against the US that has to this date not attacked that is a more than well reason to start shooting.

Hard to play the good guy attacked by another nation when you're attacking a second nation that is out to sea just looking out for your trade ships.

So no, i dont think the theory about Syria and Jemens being the same holds water.
