Need help with getting a new CPU

    Specs:
    CPU: i5-2300 @ 2.80 GHz
    Ram: 8GB
    GPU: GTX 670
    PSU: 525W Multi-GPU Approved PSU
    Motherboard: Alienware 046MHW

So with the holidays coming up I'm looking into finally upgrading my PC's CPU. The problem is I don't know much about processors such as which would be considered an upgrade as well as which ones would actually be compatible with my system. Not worried about price just looking for some suggestions.

Really not much point in upgrading that socket, and honestly most games should be able to play fine on a stock i5 from that gen. I would wait for AMD zen and intel kaby lake (just a few more months) and then take a look at upgrading.

there is no upgrade path for that socket. your best bet is to just build a new system, you can wait for AND zed / intel kaby lake or you can just build a skylake 6500 or 6600K system on black friday/cyber monday.
    PC: CPU - i7-4790K, MoBo - MSI Z97 gaming 5, Memory - 16G Corsair vengeance LPX DDR3, GPU - EVGA 970 FTW edition, Storage- 1x Sandisk X400 M.2 512GB, 1X WD blue 1TB HDD, 1x WD green 1TB HDD, PSU - EVGA 550W 80+ bronze.
