Get a hidden appearance colour using another colour?

So as the title says, can you unlock an artifact hidden appearance recolour (for example complete 200 wqs) using another colour (for example from 1000 kills) or do you have to have the original hidden appearance equipped?

Yes, you can use any color variation of the hidden artifact. You can even transmog over it, and everything you do still counts
