Smile Sweden needs 64K immigrants annually to solve its labour shortage

    http://www.thelocal.se/jobs/article/...loyment-agency

Sweden requires 64,000 immigrants annually if it wants to prevent labour shortages from hampering economic growth, the country's employment agency (Arbetsförmedlingen) has said.

Speaking to public broadcaster SVT, the agency’s director general Mikael Sjöberg predicted that a labour shortage will start to hurt Sweden’s growth as early as next year, before becoming an increasing problem thereafter, as employers in the private and public sector struggle to find people with the right skills.

A decreasing local-born population means immigration will be needed to solve the shortage, the agency explained.

“Sweden’s birth rate is simply too low. The home-born population is reducing.
To continue having the possibility of growing further, labour is needed, and therefore an increased population,” Johan Bissman from Arbetsförmedlingen told The Local.

The impact is already being felt by some companies, he noted, and the problem will grow in 2017.

“The shortage is already impacting the public sector and more businesses are going to feel the effects in 2017. A number of private companies are also affected currently, and that number is going to grow next year,” Bissman said.

“For the public sector the shortage means that the standard of service they provide is lowered, for example through lengthened processing times. For private companies, the shortage can lead to losing orders.”

Reducing the number of people leaving upper secondary school (gymnasium) before finishing their course and raising the retirement age (61-67, but traditionally 65) are ways to help alleviate the situation according to the employment agency, but it emphasized that immigration will still be needed for a long-term solution.

Part of the reason for Sweden’s situation is that the demand for goods and services has remained high as the country escaped relatively unscathed from the global economic crisis compared to other nations, the agency observed.

“It’s a complex situation. Sweden was well positioned in the economic crisis while other countries found developments more difficult. We recovered from it faster and therefore also found it easier to increase our rate of production,” Bissman said.

“Household consumption stood strong, which has an effect on demand. A weak krona has been and is good for the export industry as well as hospitality,” he added.
Pretty interesting. Let's hope the officials in Sweden take the necessary action.
Better to be safe than sorry in cases like this. Maybe aim for say 90-100K annually?

Yeah dont raise more babies in Sweden. Transport people from the Mid East and North Africa. The enrichment will be so high it's hard to imagine.

That is the main issue, yes.
Good luck with that though. We don't pay people enough and it's cold as heck.

It might be just me, but when there is economic depression, political apathy and "extreme *-wingers" generally raging all over media (and sometimes the streets), education funds cut, healthcare funds cut, most people not getting jobs, outcries from babyboomers that "millenials has to pay for our pensions! those lazy bumbs" - it doesnt really make anyone go "hmm, I should get a child so they get to see this terrible decade"

Edit: You sure like to post clearly controversial topics like these, dont ya? Abortion, immigrants, brexit, syria, rap*, bullied suicides. What else? :P

The Swedes current reputation of having an insane immigration policy isn't going to help either, it makes moving there an unattractive proposition for those with skills they need going forward.

Bringing in skilled immigration, that fills gaps in the market and is in numbers that can be absorbed into the local culture, and from people willing to adapt to the native culture, is a positive.

All immigration is bad/all immigration is good, are both silly ideas. A sensible immigration policy is what nations should be aiming for, but too many countries have people in them that scream racism at any immigration policy discussion, which stifles debate and ends up polarising people into the all or nothing camps.

No, people are paid enough. The problem is that many of the pools we would recruit from in many areas have been imposed with absurd requirements. Earlier there were no formal language requirements and in the case of dentists, the clinic set the requirements at b2 for language requirements which meant that you should be able to understand every day speech, now for some reason the government has intervened and raised it to c1, which is a buttload of more requiring than b2. To even reach c1 it pretty much requires that you have lived in sweden for some time to learn hte language or studied swedish abroad as a foreign language before even coming to Sweden. Such requirements are nothing but absurd.

This effectively hampers us from recruiting foreign workers to fill the spots.

The labor migration policy is too strict while asylum is too lax. It's too hard to move to Sweden as a labor migrant and too easy if you're seeking asylum. A lot of people simply can't pass the absurd requirements that labor migrants are subjected to, like needing to have c1 knowledge of the language when b2 is just fine and has worked previously.

It should be enough if they can make themselves understood in Swedish or in English in my opinion.

As if their retarded high taxes relative to the rest of the west wasn't a large enough disincentive.

Yea prbly should aim much higher since a large portion of them will most likely not work.

I went there back in the 90s, with the possibility of moving, it was a lovely country (abeit a bit odd), but even then it was crazy expensive compared to London and London wasn't/isn't cheap by any measure.

Theyre not no, because you get a far higher QoL compared to most countries, the taxes are worth it.

Sure, there are a lot of space to make cuts if the politicians could be taught to use the tax money properly. Now it seems to be all about sponsoring their luxury dinners and luxury trips and so on in addition to sustaining the systems we have.

There's a lot of inefficiency in the management of resources.

Mismanagement tends to have a positive relationship with bureaucracy it seems.

What shortage, exactly? The dentist shortage is caused by an absurd change by the government/officials. Earlier there were no formal language requirements for labor migrants to come here and work as dentists as long as they had the education. The clinics set their own requirements at level b2, which means you can understand every day speech and make yourself understood in every day speech. For some stupid reason the government/officials decided to intervene and impose a formal requirement to it, at level c1, which means you either need to have lived in Sweden for some time already or studied Swedish abroad as a foreign language to pass this requirement. That's just absurd.
