Behold: The rise and fall of Wendy’s hip Twitter account.

The fast food chain’s Twitter — which decided to suddenly get cool last week with some snarky tweets — finally blew it Wednesday by tweeting a version of the Pepe the Frog meme, which has been officially designated as a hate symbol.

It all began innocently enough with a Twitter user — apparently amused by the Wendy’s recent tweet hot streak — tweeted to ask, “got any memes?”

The Wendy’s account, which has more than one million followers, replied with a Pepe the Frog cartoon — styled with red hair, to match the company’s famous logo.



Joke’s on Wendy’s, which apparently did not know that image was deemed last September by the Anti-Defamation League as a hate symbol.

Wendy’s seemingly didn’t get the memo, and deleted the tweet within minutes.

“Our community manager was unaware of the recent evolution of the Pepe meme's meaning and this tweet was promptly deleted,” the account wrote in a tweet.

The Pepe predicament put a bump in Wendy’s sudden quest for viral fame. After running a fairly standard corporate account, Wendy’s went haywire Dec. 30 when it got into a flamewar with a Twitter user who accused the chain of freezing its beef.

So I'm guessing Wendy's has been putting out Sonic the Hedgehog twitter account tier tweets. But since they're way more mainstream they have to stop now. Kind of disappointed. I can't believe a whole meme is pretty much going to make you look bad if you use it because the ADL says it's bad.

But in recent months, Pepe’s been almost entirely co-opted by the white supremacists who call themselves the “alt-right.” They’ve decided to take back Pepe by adding swastikas and other symbols of anti-semitism and white supremacy.

“We basically mixed Pepe in with Nazi propaganda, etc. We built that association,” one prominent white supremacist told the Daily Beast.

Trump has retweeted his white supremacist supporters with regularity, but the connection between the alt-right and his campaign continues to strengthen. Trump has been slow to disavow support from Ku Klux Klansmen and white supremacy groups, and he recently hired Breitbart.com’s Steve Bannon as his campaign CEO (and Bannon isn’t shy about the fact that his “news” organization is the “platform for the alt-right”).

To be fair, there is a very real association, made intentionally by the white supremacist movements - to associate themselves with Pepe the Frog. So that explanation on the Hillary Clinton site is only mildly incorrect in that it is dismissive of the full picture to get to the point she's trying to make, which again - isn't actually wrong.

With that said, if white supremacists started slapping swastikas on Gandhi, it wouldn't mean Gandhi supported white supremacy: the reality of Pepe/White supremacy is a little more complex than Hillary portrays - but the connection is a perfectly legitimate criticism/commentary. There is a ton of Pepe stuff out there with swastikas and SS uniforms and so on.

Is every Pepe image an advocation of white power? No.

Do you need to associate Donald Trump with Pepe The Frog to call him a racist? No.
