The problem with English

Americans uniquely have an opposition to the Spanish language.

Not all of us. And for me, it's not that I have an issue with Spanish as a language (I took 2 years in High School and 2 semesters in college), it's that a very large portion of Spanish speaking people in the Southern US primarily, don't know how to speak English. So in those areas of America, you can't do anything because of the language barrier. Nothing against these people, or their language, but this is America...and I know we don't have a declared primary language, but c'mon...English is the primary language of the US and I can't fucking stand it when I'm listening to the radio or something, on an English station, when all of a sudden I get a cascade of commercials in Spanish because for whatever reason that station has decided that the people it needs to advertise to aren't the English speakers it's the ones who can't understand or learn English.

Refusal to learn the language is pretty self defeating IMO, but I understand that it's just an act of rebellion because they feel they shouldn't have to learn a second language just to be able to communicate with other Americans (legal or otherwise) in America...it is a little aggravating.

To put it as simply as possible, without going into detail, hearing commercials where I live, in Spanish, bothers me for 2 reasons: 1) I don't know enough Spanish, or know it well enough to understand a native speaker talking as quickly as they do on a commercial. Since I don't understand it, it's a waste of my time, but more importantly 2) The socioeconomic implications hearing a commercial in Spanish means for the area I'm in or where I live.

While this is anecdotal at best I have seen very few, if any, areas where the population is primarily Spanish/ non-English speaking in the area of the US I live that was not a low income, rundown, sketchy area.

Of course, it means people can make plots against you and you have no idea what they are saying. Me, my mother, sister and other family can speak to one another and be reasonably certain its practically secret code to the people around us.

Unless you have a smart phone that can translate on the fly. Speaking English is just something everyone has to do. Whatever language your non english speaking country has is secondary at best.

What's wrong with Spanish ? We deal daily with bi-lingual customers and usually several times a week with only Spanish speakers. I also visit several places in central and South America where a rudimentary understanding of the language is extremely helpful.

Spain is also on the bucket list.

Nothing is wrong with Spanish, south of the US border. In the US, I refuse to speak it, even though I do know some of it hard not to when you live in the SW for a few years). If I went to a country that speaks it, then I would expect them to expect me to at least try to use it. I am a 4th gen German-American and a 3rd Gen Polish-American, both families made it a point to shun the "native" language and learn English. No one born in the US on either side spoke the "native" language, and one great-grandmother refused to become a US citizen because she felt she was not worthy because she couldnt speak English well. If I moved to Germany I sure in the hell would not expect anyone to communicate to me in English.

My mothertongue language is russian.
By the way it`s really funny to see words borrowed from russian in languages of our neighbours.
In Kazakhstan you often hear something like " *no-idea-what-they-saying*RUSSIAN WORD*no-idea-what-they-saing*.
Russian is poluted by loaned words, mostly because young peoples thint that it`s cool. A lot of of loaned words used by them can be adequatly translated and this translation not that long. I really hate words like sweatshot, barbershop, hoodie, as example.

It always amuses me how in some movies, non english writing is just a collection of words, or even just letters, that do not make sense, let alone follow a proper grammar pattern. I mean, how hard is it to just google a phrase, even if you do not have a specialist or a person simply familiar with that particular language.

LMAO. Good luck finding a Spanish speaker outside of the South America.

Unfortunately, I learned French as a third language on the suggestion of my parents. It was a stupid decision. I graduated from college in 1992. Fast forward 25 years later, I have used French in my career exactly twice.

Over the course of my career, I had to learn Spanish, which was very easy. It is the language that has helped me the most, and I have discovered Spanish speakers in all sorts of unikely places around the world, from South Africa to East Asia and the Philippines.

The most useful European language apart from English would be German, which I also had to learn.

In conclusion, I must say: GOOD LUCK FINDING A FRENCH SPEAKER pretty much anywhere in the world except France and African French Colonies. So, unless you plan to enlist in the Legion Etrangere or go live in French Guyana, just give French a miss. I have come to regret loading my brain cells with this useless language.
